When Melbourne were going throught the merger vote in '96, what was Barassi's position? For, against or did he stay out of it?

Cheers

Ridley says in the book "Urge to Merge" that he was initially in favour of it, though was "half changing his mind on the eve of the vote".

Obviously you are not happy with him for coming out publicly saying that North should have relocated and are wondering whether he is being hypocritical? Times have changed now my friend so his views 11 years ago don't have a lot to do with the current football enviroment.

To answer the question though, i am pretty sure he was for the merge but not 100% sure. He is one guy who would prefer to see the game evolve and i tend to agree with him.

Cheers

Iniatially he was for the merge but swayed son after. I think the situations were quite different so you dont hav to get into the hypocrisy side of things.

Merging and reclocation is of course different though. I want the Kangaroos to remain in North Melbourne but unfortunately not everyone will agree with me. Those who don't are normally either:

-High up in the AFL with the league's prosperity in mind (like Barassi)
-Bitter supporters from other clubs
-The one that shits me the most, unpassionate bystanders who think that everything should be run like a business enterprise and can't seem to understand the passion.

Obviously not happy about his comments- especially now we have made a decision and need to move on. I was actually wondering if he cared about any team he had spent time - at apart from Sydney, and it appears it isn't the case.

I'm sure you would feel different about the 'evolution' of the game if it was you club in the gun.

We were in the gun. That's what '96 was about. Our board bought the carrot that the AFL was dangling in front of us which was back then $6M. Doesn't seem much now?

As for Barassi, you got to keep in mind that he was offered a lifeline by the AFL to go up and coach Sydney, so is pretty happy to toe the AFL line when it suites.

And he was pro-merger but announced on the night of the vote that he changed his position, which pissed Ridley off greatly. Unlike the great Robert Flower who's position was always anti-merger.
