THE AFL will consider funding four rookies at each club from next year to ensure there is parity in the competition.

Each club, with the exception of Brisbane and Sydney, is allowed up to six under-23 rookies but several clubs, notably Victorian teams, cannot afford the extra cost.

Sydney and Brisbane can have up to nine rookies to encourage the clubs to invest in local talent.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou told club presidents at a meeting on Thursday he was investigating the issue.

He said yesterday that clubs could be given the extra money required through the distribution fund as part of the new TV rights deal.

"What we are trying to do in our distribution strategy is get parity so each club has four rookies," Demetriou said.

Financially struggling clubs such as the Western Bulldogs have been able to afford just the one rookie this year.

Ravaged by injury, the Dogs have been severely disadvantaged because they have not had extra players to call upon.

Bulldogs president David Smorgon welcomed Demetriou's interest at the presidents' meeting.

"He was hopeful that every club could have at least four rookies, that's one of the things they are looking at," Smorgon said yesterday. "He raised it without being definitive on it. It might become part of the money we get from the distribution.

"I am pleased Andrew spoke about that because from the Bulldogs' perspective, it would be very good."

Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade met his board this week and the issue of rookies was high on the agenda.

The Dogs are hopeful powerful fans at the club will help raise the $120,000 needed for four rookies next year.

"It's a real issue for us next year. We're going to have to find some extra money to have three, maybe four rookies," Smorgon said this week.

"If we had another two or three rookies, not only would they be on the senior list, but they would be getting a game of senior football."
