Crows curse haunts Roos20 April 2007 Herald-SunTim Morrissey

PAUL Roos can't explain why Adelaide remains the only bogy team during his stellar reign as Sydney coach.

Roos has methodically built a winning program and culture that has taken the Swans to back-to-back Grand Finals. However, in his seven clashes against the Crows, Roos has managed just one victory. And that rare win was in Neil Craig's second game as Adelaide coach in Round 15, 2004 when the Swans held on to win by 13 points in a scrappy, low scoring affair at the SCG. "Adelaide always seem to play well against us and they've played a lot of really good footy to be consistent," Roos said. "The first time we played them under Neil Craig they probably didn't play that well and that's the only time we've managed to beat them. "That is sort of usual because apart from that first game they haven't had a downer in terms of their own form against us. Since I've been coaching I can't think of another team to do that to us." Roos has a winning record against 12 of the 15 other clubs in the competition including a perfect 7-0 record against Carlton and 4-0 against the Bulldogs. Apart from Adelaide, the other teams Roos doesn't have a winning record against are West Coast (5-6) and Port Adelaide (3-4). Tomorrow night the Swans, on paper at least, have their best chance of getting one back on Adelaide with the club's injury list swelling to 18 players. Roos last night played down the significance of the Crows' casualties saying the raw numbers can be deceiving. "When you look at their team, presuming Ben Rutten is playing, Adelaide's defence is intact and the forward line is intact as well," Roos said. "Although Trent Hentschel is not going to play at all this year they've still got Scott Welsh, Ian Perrie, Nathan Bock and Tyson Edwards. "So they're probably only one down in their forward line, no players down in defence and arguably their midfield is still very strong. "Robert Shirley is probably more of a run-with-type player but Mark Ricciuto is clearly a big loss to their midfield. "Ruckman Rhett Biglands is not going to play all year either. "Adelaide is probably only three players short of having their best team tomorrow night. "With all due respect, Ricciuto is probably the only one out of that group that you automatically say he's a star player in that team who can't be replaced. "Whilst Neil will be frustrated by all the injuries, Melbourne's Neale Daniher is in a much worse position with David Neitz, Russell Robertson and Brock McLean all out at the same time. "With Adelaide at least their injuries, apart from Ricciuto, aren't from their best 10 Players.

This article appears in today's Herald Sun. While alot of it is true Roos surely must have forgotten about Johncock as he must be rated in Adelaide's top 10 (if not 5) players by most coaches. I would also rate Kenny as being close to one of our top 10 players as well.

If I knew how I would!

Very new to this posting thing. Is anyone else able to do it?

Sounds to me like Roos can clearly see Adelaide has been decimated by injury, hence he knows they've got a real chance, so he wants to fool the public into thinking that we're actually not that depleted; makes the win, if he gets it, look better. What **** that is.

Hentschel, McGregor, Biglands, Johncock, Shirley, Ricciuto off the top of my head are in there for our best players.

I think he will find Roo is actually a loss to our forward line.

And Stiffy is definently a top ten player and one of the best in his position in the country.

The only reason we've coped with the massive injury list is the not dependent on one or two stars and everyone plays their part system the club has built. And its a huge credit to all involved.

That said, you can understand he was never going to come out and say "they've got a huge injury list and we should win easily" but I think our team deserves more credit than that.

Karma again says we should win.

I doubt that of Roos. He is never one to show anything less than respect for the opposition - and his record against Adelaide is the one that is really poor, so there is no way he will be underestimating your guys.

I suspect he genuinely forgot about Johncock when he made that comment.

In terms of the rest, they're good players (does Adelaide have anything other than good players in their senior team?) but most would probably rate Edwards, Goodwin, McLeod, Rutten, Burton, Thompson, Bassett (and Ricciuto) as your best and most important group, with the rest you named fitting in around the 9-15 group.

Agreed, but that means the 9-15 that lines up against Sydney tomorrow is missing nearly all of the usual suspects, making us very vulnerable imo. Johncock is definitely in that "most important group" you mentioned though.

You know your coach Liz. Sounds like he was giving an interview for the game and probably got asked 101 questions about the Adelaides injury list. Some quotes he obviously forgot a player or two.

"If you want injuries, and none of us do, but if you get them they're in a reasonable position, because apart from Graham Johncock and (Mark) Ricciuto, at least they're to more the peripheral type players, with due respects to (Rhett) Biglands and (Trent) Hentschel," he said.

So you don't think that he was at least "downplaying" Adelaide's injury woes?

Hentschel isn't a peripheral player, at all. Most of us were viewing him as the long awaited messiah to our almost decade long forward line ways. Roo & Stiffy are obviously in our top 10 most important players. McGregor, when fit, is there abouts as well.

That being said, I'd like to think Roos was being straight up and just forgot.

Agreed, his comment are more about showing respect for the players that are playing, rather than a lack of respect for those that aren't.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there.

One of the most impressive things about the Crows is the evenness of whatever team is put out on the paddock. At times last year your guys looked completely unbeatable, and that was with a decent trickle of injury throughout the year. Whoever came in, stepped up and played their role straight away.

It wasn't until the last month or so that the cumulative weight of all those injuries seemed to take its toll.

You play West Coast, you know that if you can moderate the impact of Kerr and Judd (easier said than done), you stand a pretty decent chance of winning. Against the Crows it never seems to be that straightforward. Even if you manage to contain the Riccuitos and McLeods of this world, there always seem to be other players ready to stand up and dominate.

And whereas West Coast's strength is clearly in the midfield and the Swans probably its forward line (though both have pretty decent defences too), with Adelaide there seems to be a strength and evenness right across the park, even if the forward line doesn't look much on paper.
