Ross lyons comments on G train

Just read this in an article thought it sounded a bit wierd is he frustrated or just beign honest what are your thoughts.

" With Fraser Gehrig ruled out of the clash after having surgery on a broken right hand, Lyon said the Eagles match would give Saints fans a glimpse of life without the match-winning full forward.


"Our young key forwards [Nick] Riewoldt and [Justin] Koschitzke may be a bit like Raph Clarke, you get to see where they are at a little bit," he said.
"And we get to see St Kilda without Fraser Gehrig. The facts are Fraser's not going to be around much longer, so in some senses there's a little bit of transition occurring."

I think he's just stating the fact that Frase will not be at the club next year...

Yeah i reckon at this moment in time that G is probably going to retire at the end of this year.

All RL is saying basically is that this game against WCE without G will be a glimpse into the future - when we dont have G. It gives the coaching staff a chance to look at different options/structures for the fwd line. Hope Sweeney is given a chance.

Hopefully some of our midfielders can push fwd on sunday and chip in with some goals - we desparately need more goal-kickers.

The last four seasons has seen Gehrig win two Coleman medals, run second in one and run fourth in the other. His worst record in that time was 71 goals. No other forward ín the league has been as dominant.

He has done almost all that he wanted to achieve out of footy.
If he decides to retire - then that is fine, but to start calling his number because you are disappointed with his results is ridiculous.

Never mentioned his results, he has been great!! It's more of a balance thing?
Because despite having a very dominant forward the Saints unfortunately haven't capitalized in the past few years.
I just raised the question after they functioned so well in perth without him??

Fair enough raising the point, but it's worth watching the perth game more closely here. The main time we were dominant was in the 2nd quarter, obviously. Kosi was instrumental in that, but notice that his 6 shots on goal (and he SHOULD have converted those other 2 he missed - the only flaw in his otherwise perfect game) were all from (I'm pretty sure) contested marks, less than 10m from goal. The other Saints players were "rolling the dice", as Gerard Healy put it - banging it long into the contest and trusting that Kosi would be able to strong-arm a mark and goal it.

Point is, there's another player who LOVES that style of footy, and his name is Fraser Gehrig. If we play the style we did on Sunday, Frase will have a field day - 5 goals, minimum. In previous games under RL, Frase has generally been called to run up the ground or lead to the wing, which is less effective, especially for him.

Now, factor in that Richmond might put a young-un on G, and my point is made even stronger - kids have fast legs but wussy bodies. If Frase has to outRUN an 18yo, he'll kick 2, get frustrated, and get reported. But if he has to outMUSCLE a kid, he could get 7+!

You just made me feel better. Yep, Frase has played best when he's stayed at FF rather than flooding up to CHB. The other thing is that Frase plays best when we're playing sh#t teams. That's been the reality for the last two to three years. And they don't come much sh*tter than Richmond (apologies, Tigers fans). GO FRASE!
