Well, after Geelong's fantastic victory against the Carring Bush on Saturday at the MCG, we face another great challenge this week when we play Essendon at Colonial Stadium on Saturday night.

Essendon are coming off a loss to West Coast at Subiacco and are sitting 8th on the ladder with 8 wins and a draw, whereas Geelong are 6th on the ladder with 9 wins and 6 losses, so it should be a great match between 2 good sides. Back in round one, Essendon won by 50 points at the MCG, but things were very different back then. Essendon were full of confidence with very few worries, while Geelong were very inexperienced, and were still finding their feet with their young players, 3 of them playing their first games that night.

For Geelong, I expect us to dominate the rucks with Steven King in fine form. King has really gained in confidence as the season has gone, and is giving first use of the ball to our running players.

Corey Enright also continues to impress with the quality of his performances. His skills and decision making are of a high standard and he has really given us lots of drive off half back and on the ball since he came back in round 10 after injury.

Cameron Mooney is also a very important player in our forward line. If he can do well, this makes it easier for the likes of Kent Kingsley, as Mooney can provide another tall marking option for us.

Ronnie Burns is also a key player and started to find form last week at the MCG. Ronnie gives our forward line that unpredictability which can be hard to match up on, and with Riccardi, Steve Johnson and Lord doing well of late, should give us enough firepower to kick a winning score.

As for our defence, they have stood up well all season when under pressure. Matthew Scarlett, Tom Harley and Ben Graham are leading the way, while I've been very impressed with the play of David Wojcinski off half back, running through the lines with speed.

With Brenton Sanderson likely to miss through injury, Joel Corey should return after missing the Collingwood game with the flu.

Anyway, it should be a fantastic contest at Colonial Stadium next Saturday, and I'm very confident that we can win. We're playing really well and have lots of confidence, while the Bombers will be tired, coming off a 6 day break and very hard interstate match the week before. I think our speed will also worry Essendon, who are not a quick side.

MY PREDICTION: Geelong by 14 points

Go Cats!!

Well said, as usual.

It's going to be yet another test by Mark Thompson to get the most out his squad, just as he did against Collingwood. In that respect, it's a showing of "pupil versus teacher", as he goes up against the master tactician in Kevin Sheedy.

And if there's any time in particular where I would hate to play against the Bombers, it would be where Sheedy's preparing his side coming off a loss. And when was the last time Geelong were ahead of the mighty Essendon on the ladder in a week where they faced off? It's been a while...

Makes for a dangerous combination, that's for sure.

Here's some food for thought... from an article on the afl.com.au site, could the Bombers be just another ordinary side? Could their eighth-place position not be a mirage at all?

http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&spg=display&articleid=46930

Even with the recent return of James Hird and Matthew Lloyd to the starting fold, they might be just another middle-of-the-pack side, indeed.

Regardless, it'll be a different story than when these teams met back in Week 1, when the Bombers rode Hird's six-goal exploits to run out easy 50-point winners.

The review of that opening-week match is here: http://catsfc.com.au/Default.asp?pg=matchfocus&spg=postgame&m_tournamentmatch_id=736

My pick: Geelong to continue their run of form, as Thompson gets every ounce of ability and commitment from the members in his squad.

Cats by 23.

Cheers,
William

yup, King should dominate, with Essendons lack of quality ruckmen.

essendon will be looking to bounce back after ordinary performances since playing Melbourne

Salmon still knows enough to at least reduce, maybe minimise Kings dominance. Experience counts for something.

I thought Salmon was out injured from the game against Melbourne a couple of weeks ago.

yeah i thought he had bruised ribs...

and hille is young, and not a dominating ruckman.

allessio isn't a full-time ruckman either

With Cameron Ling suspended tonight by the AFL tribunal for one week, and Brenton Sanderson likely to miss through injury, I am expecting James Bartel and Joel Corey to come back into the side.

Go Cats!!

Well he's out now anyway - I was hoping he was only going to miss a week. King will probably force Essendon to throw Hird into the centre bounces to try and minimise Geelongs centre clearances.

Well you'll all no doubt be interested in learning that in the forum on the Essendon site, Geelong has been overwhelmingly voted the team that most bomber supporters would like to see win the flag if Essendon doesn't win it.

I doubt that you'll be getting too much support from the red and black horde this Saturday though.

Good to see Joel Corey back after being out last week with the flu and also Daniel Foster, who has been playing very well in the VFL. This should be a really good match, and a great challenge for Geelong. Bring it on!! :)

KENT KINGSLEY KICKS 6 AS THE AWESOME YOUNG CATS SEND THE BOMBERS OUT OF THE EIGHT!!

What a fantastic performance by Geelong tonight at Colonial Stadium to completely outplay the highly fancied Essendon and win by 39 points.

We never really looked like losing the match after Cameron Mooney kicked 3 goals to get us going in the first quarter, and along with Kent Kingsley (6 goals) and Peter Riccardi (2 goals) up forward, was too much for Essendon to overcome.

Steven King controlled the rucks yet again tonight, continuing on his great form this season so far which is great to see after his injury last season.

James Rahilly was good tonight as well, getting over 20 possessions and giving us plenty of drive around the packs. James has really taken his opportunity in the last month after coming back into the senior side.

James Kelly was fantastic tonight and continues to impress. He gathered over 20 possessions and was one of the reasons Geelong controlled the ball around the midfield.

Other good players for Geelong I thought were David Clarke, Paul Chapman, Tom Harley, (on Scott Lucas) Matthew Scarlett, (on Matthew Lloyd) Daniel Foster (when he came on) and Joel Corey.

We are now 10-6 and a great chance to see some finals action this year. We have a very important match next Sunday against Adelaide at Skilled Stadium.... a win for us will all but seal a spot in the finals.

SCOREBOARD:
Geelong... 14.11.95
Essendon ... 8.8.56

What continues to be amazing about Geelong's current streak is how Thompson is able to keep all 22 players in and fighting for each other together. This win, as comprehensive as it was, no exception, once again.

Kingsley got off to a slow start, but it was only a matter of time until he was going to get his goals. In the meantime, Mooney and Riccardi set the tone perfectly.

I thought the early loss of David Wojinski due to an ankle injury would have gifted Essendon a better chance to attack in his absence, but Steve Johnson came up well for the second game running, and the who squad came together once again.

Scarlett had yet another strong game in defense-- he allowed a few goals to Lloyd early on, but Lloyd hardly had a sniff of the ball in the second half.

Just a thought... the way Matthew Scarlett and snuffed out some of the top forwards he's gone up against, the guy needs a nickname. I suggest "The Human Eraser". :D

Otherwise, I have to concur that Kelly and King were just a couple of several outstanding players for Geelong-- but the way the whole squad battled together was the reason behind this win, yet again.

Cheers,
William
