The season (for the seniors) draws to a close at home with a match against Casey Scorpions, who need a win (bigger than the win Williamstown might enjoy) and a Magpies loss to claim the minor premiership.
The Hawks, having been mathematically eliminated last weekend by their loss to the Magpies, have nothing to play for but pride and potentially contracts on a list somewhere next season. The Hawks are unlikely to slip below their current 10th position, unless they are belted by the Scorpions and/or one (or more) of Coburg, Werribee and the Blues win big in their final matches of the season.
The Hawks campaign has been crippled by a spate of injuries suffered by the senior Hawks (which depletes the depth available to Marco Bello) and a series of close losses that will see the Hawks finish with less wins than losses for the first time since 2011, when the Hawks finished the regular season 7-12 (but still played finals). It will be the first time Box Hill hasn't played at least one final since 2008, when the Hawks finished the 20 game season 6-14, which was good enough for only 11th on the ladder.
With Hawthorn looking to pillage the Box Hill ranks for players, expect a weakened outfit to play the Scorpions on Saturday afternoon.
It's much better news for the development squad. They will head into yet another finals campaign looking to go one step better than the past few years and will treat Saturday's curtain raiser against the Scorpions as a final tune-up before the finals begin. The Hawks will finish at least one game clear on top of the ladder (if they lose to the Scorpions on the weekend) and could conceivably finish three games clear.
As per usual, 3WBC 94.1FM (www.3wbc.org.au) will provide live coverage of the senior match from 1.00pm. The Hawks will have regular updates of both games via its twitter feed at www.twitter.com/boxhillhawks.
Teams to follow.
