he's earnt his spot in the crows side.
from what i've seen in the games that he's played with sturt he's been a really good part of their side.. i'm not suprised in the slightest that they called him up to the crows side.

Mattners inclusion is probably only the minor suprise. Would have thought Massie would have been a better defensive option for the Burgoyne brothers, but otherwise not too unhappy with our line up.

Yeah I'd much prefer Massie to Mattner. Is Massie fully fit?

I caught up with couple of guys from Uni today for lunch and a couple of bears and soon surprise surprise the talk turned to Showdown. We started discussing match ups and one of the boys said that Mattner would be a good match up for Junior.

I went on to do a bit of a search of Mattners draft camp results of 2000. He was among top 5 % in 20 m sprints. His time was 2.92 seconds.

revised match ups:

Smart on Tredrea
Hart on C. Cornes
Mattner on S. Burgoyne
Stiffy on P. Burgoyne
Torney on Pickett.

:D

I guess that leaves Bassett or McGregor to take the resting ruckman up forward?

After all our guessing and wavering, our first instincts were the correct ones.

Marsh out because he is bloody hopeless.

Riley out because he is marginally off the boil and showdowns require hard tough real goers.

Perrie, of course, was a certainty to get back in. While we were pumping up Massie's tyres, Mattner is a hard fast close checking player who has obviously been chosen for a role in this game. Good luck to both of them.

Any thoughts on a suprise match up of Mattner on Wanganeen, especially if Wanganeen lines up down back.?

Its a possibility. After listening to Nigel I would not be surprised if Wanganeen gets tagged. I know it sounds a bit unusual that you tag someone playing in a back pocket but he is so booldy dangerous you have to keep an eye on him. I think Wangas will get some attention but I am not sure about Mattner. I see Mattner as a very good match up for S. Burgoyne which frees Hart to take on Cornes and Smart to take on Tredders. Only time will tell. I can't wait.:D

I honestly think that we might see the rare sight of a tagger being placed on a defender in this game.

Wangas has been in magnificent touch this year, and IMO is the key to the Port backline at the moment. I think that AFC will try to cut his run from the backlines down to a bare minimum by trying to cut him out of the game. Whether that's with Mattner or somebody else is yet to be seen.

Mattner has obviously been brought back for a purpose and if he's not the one on Wangas, his other targets could be either of the Burgers or Roger James, the Power's most skilful player.

Both Rucci and Ebert agreed that the Crows thought that 2 of the Power's backmen were very vulnerable, but refused to identify the players when KG wanted to know more, other than to say that they were originally from interstate. Not much of a clue when you consider that every single one of their defence is originally from interstate!! :D

If I had to guess who were the 2 vulnerable defenders, it would be Paxman for a lack of pace, and Hardwicke because he is very easily distracted. Certainly wouldn't be Wakelin and Wangas.
