Essendon meet perennial contenders Williamstown this week, who should be fresh after coming off the bye last week. Williamstown have had a fantastic start to the season, winning 4 of their first 5 games, sitting 5th on the ladder as it stands, whilst Essendon have only managed two wins so far this season after 5 games. The last time these two met, Williamstown were able to win their way into the VFL Grand Final in a tight contest at North Port Oval.
Williamstown's last start was a tight loss to Sandringham, going down by 9 points at Trevor Barker Oval, the Zebras lead at every break, Williamstown ruing missed chances in the last quarter to win the match. Jake Greiser and Mitchell Hibberd were prominent for the Seagulls through the middle, collecting 23 and 22 disposals respectively whilst Nick Ebinger was their most lively forward with 4 goals
Essendon had a shock loss to cellar dwellers North Melbourne last Saturday, going down by 15 points to a team they should have beaten comfortably if they were in finals contention. Angus Baker was the shining light for Essendon in the defence, collecting 30 disposals whilst young ruck Nick Bryan had 24 disposals and 43 hit outs against Tristan Xerri in a great ruck duel, Patrick Ambrose kicking 5 goals in a bid to return to the senior team.
