Re: Round One team

If pre-season form means anything then Buckley will play and Macaffer will not.

Thank god NAB Cup form means SFA then. Half the players are instructed to play at a lower gear for fitness reasons, and you'll probably notice that the players who are out there putting their heads over it and really putting in 150% are those who are on the fringe. Buckley, JMac, Bolt, even Keefe played above the general pace level to the rest of the team. Notice how Dane 'Accumulation' Swan didn't play to his usual standard, nor did most of our topline players. I'd say that Daisy probably played the best of our A-Graders along with maybe Heater (only last night though).

I would be absolutely blown away if Buckley got a look in over Caff unless it was for significant injury concerns. Buckley did well, don't get me wrong, but he played a mixed bag of games over the whole pre-season. I was not entirely impressed consistently in a game with him apart from last night, I found his disposal under pressure to be rubbish and his decision making questionable over the games he has played. I'd take a fit Macaffer into the side over Buckley any game of the week, rain, hail, or shine.

Re: Round One team

Simon B surprised me a bit, thought he was a total spud, but hes not too bad..
Johno still looks the goods hey, thought he would get slower this year, but nahh he still has the penetrating left boot.
I like leon better in the backline, still trys to do too much, like last night, tryed to take on about 5 essendon players and was caught, resulting in an essendon goal.
Dawes is scaryly good now.. hes holding more marks then ive ever seen him..might get crucfied for saying this but i think hes better than Cloke:thumbsu:.
Krakour to play all year, had a richmond mate telling me hes a squib and doesnt go in for the ball..well how wrong was he, tough little nugget he is, love the way he plays, cant way to see him tear shreads through Port in a few weeks time.
Goood to be a pies supporter at the moment, we look extreme:):D

Re: Round One team

I have been surprised by Simon Buckley, I thought he was gone but he looks like he might be a decent player for you guys.

Re: Round One team

this is a scarily strong list, great depth and the most transparent 21/22 of all teams....

krakeour is the find of the season,

just had $1000 on pies to win the minor premiership at $2.25.
lock it in eddie.

Re: Round One team

How much time is Beams going to spend in the midfield this year? He has seemed in his element the last few games in the guts for 100% of his game*. His kicking has improved and he's finding more of the ball.

Would you move him to full time midfield (rest in forwardline or bench)?

*the time he has spent on the ground, not including subs etc.

Re: Round One team

You know he butchers the ball you mean. I did not see that happen last night or last week. I thought he was one of our best players. Criticism is fine when it is deserved but not when it is given irrespective of the player's performance. Neither Keefe or Blair will get a game on the strength of last night's performance, though Blair will not be judged purely on one game.

I think thats a bit rich though.

He isn't ready for a game for the best team in the country quite yet. Showed some good signs last couple of weeks... but also showed some poor ones.

Will be really interesting to see who they play as the sub. I reckon it will be Neon. But I wouldn't be surprised if it is Tarrant. It needs to be someone who can fill a gap at either end of the ground I'd say. It won't be Johnson IMO... he is a certain starter.

Re: Round One team

Ok so we've seen the preseason and won the cup, now who do we play round 1???

For mine:

Toovey, Tarrant, Buckley
Shaw, Reid, O'Brien
Thomas, Pendles, Sidebottom
Beams, Cloke, Didak
Krakouer, Dawes, Blair

Jolly, Swan, Ball

Wellingham, Johnson, Brown SUB: Davis

Apologies to Caf, love him but he was poor tonight. He and Blair are the ones walking the tightrope. Obviously it will be out of Keefe and Buckley as to who takes Maxwell's position. Goldsack looks too underdone. I'd like to see Buckley get a shot, but Keefe would be just as likely.

I reckon you've nailed it. As soon as I saw the thread title I thought to myself that I'd leave Macaffer out. Will be a close run thing for Buckley to get a callup. Keefe may get the gig if for no other reason than being cover for Reid in case his ankle flares up.

Davis has to start on the ground. Blair Johnson or Beams to be the sub.

Re: Round One team

B: A.Toovey, C.Tarrant, H.Obrien
HB: H.Shaw, B.Reid, B.Johnson
C: D.Thomas, D.Swan, S.Wellingham
HF: A.Didak, T.Cloke, S.Sidebottom
F: A.Krakour, C.Dawes, J.Blair
R: D.Jolly, S.Pendlebury, L.Ball

I: L.Brown, L.Davis, D.Beams
S: B.Macaffer

EMG: S.Buckley, L.Keefe, J.Mcarthy,

Very solid lineup, considering two key players in maxwell and nathan brown are both missing. Was a real tossup between davis, macaffer and simon buckley for the final spots but leon has been magnificent in preseason down back. Macaffer is coming back from injury so should be fine to come on for half a match as a sub. Buckley very stiff, could easily play round 1.

Same for mine. I'd have Macaffer out for Maxy when Nick comes back, with Tarrant or Davis as a sub.

Re: Round One team

I'm wondering if they'll look to boost our KPD insurance by getting some games into Keefe early. I'm not overly confident that Tarrant will run out an entire season plus finals so I wouldn't mind if the club looked to boost Keefe's experience. Say to him you've played well in the NAB Cup so we'll give you a shot at holding your spot for R1-3. I'd hate to see Tarrant go down like Presti did and then have Keefe come in without having played any regular season games.

I am kind of in agreement. Tarrant is almost guaranteed injury problems and though Keefe can be caught out, particularly against the ruck types down forward, we can probably afford him some errors against most teams. Tarrant should not be played unless fully fit, and looking at the way he played in the NAB cup, a few VFL games would do him no harm.

Not a bad idea. Keefe made some mistakes, but he's a vital backup and we might be relying on him if god forbid Tarrant is out for a couple of weeks. Normally I'd say he wouldn't be a chance, but given the situation I could definitely see it happening.

Re: Round One team

I have to say that the good pre season form of Davis, Buckley and Keefe amongst others gives me real confidence in our depth. To be honest, at the end of last year that none of those guys would play any part in our season but I think they have all got the potential to be top 22 if they sustain good form or if someone goes down. Leon in particular strikes me as a really good choice for sub, can play forward, back or midfield depending on where we need him.

The only position I'm not convinced we can cover yet is ruck, but maybe Wood will surprise us all.

This.

Agree with Macaffer as sub for this game. It's only Port, should brain them and gives Caff an ease in during second half. Like most everyone else I think the sub rule is garbage and this is the best way to make use of it this time.

Re: Round One team

Off the top of my head without reading other responses I would go

O'Brien Tarrant Toovey
Shaw Reid Johnson
Thomas Ball Wellingham
Didak Cloke Sidebottom
Macaffer Dawes Krak

Jolly Swan Pendlebury

Brown Blair Beams Davis (sub)

Re: Round One team

Im going to go with a left field sub Didak just for the first game. I think he would be good comming on about half way through the thrid term after comming back from injury.

I would play Tarrant before Keefe but I would like to rest Tarrent throughout the season and bring in Keefe for about 5 games.

To me Buckley looks like the natural successor to Jono. Been a great player for the club over a long period of time. I remember thinking in about 2001 that this guy wasn't going to make it. Glad I was wrong. However I have the feeling that this will be his last season. Jono 12 games/Buckley 13 games this season.

O'Brien Tarrant Toovey
Shaw Reid Davis
Thomas Ball Wellingham
Beams Cloke Sidebottom
Macaffer Dawes Krak

Jolly Swan Pendlebury

Brown Blair Buckley Didak (sub)

Macaffer lucky to get a game due to structure. Needs to lift or someone like Goldsack will take his spot.

Considering he played the whole game last week it'd be a backward step if Didak didn't play the full game again. I think if they weren't going to give him a full game he'd either be subbed off or played in the forward line a bit more.

Re: Round One team

do not agree with the comments re blair. I think he could overtake ball this year as our chief inside mid.

also wondering why we are only mentioning 1 sub. Barring injury won't a member of the 21 be earmarked to be subbed off? 2 names should have (sub) next to them. ie Davis for Johnson or in round one - davis for didak more likely.

Re: Round One team

B: O'Brien - Tarrant - Toovey
HB: Davis - Reid - Shaw
C: Thomas - Swan - Wellingham
HF: Beams - Cloke - Didak
F: Sidebottom - Dawes - Krakouer
Foll: Jolly - Ball - Pendlebury
Inter: Blair, Johnson, Brown
Sub: Goldsack
Emg: Buckley, Sinclair, Macaffer

I think Macaffer needs a run in the reserves to find some form, then he will straight back in.

MM said that with the new season all 22 spots are open and reputation means nothing. Going off this theory, I think Bucks is a chance to debut round one.

Re: Round One team

B Toovey Tarrant Davis
HB OBrien Reid Shaw
C Wellingham Pendlebury Thomas
HF Beams Cloke Sidebottom
F Krakouer Dawes Blair
Foll Jolly Swan Ball
Int L.Brown Johnson Caf (maybe Buckley)
Sub Didak

In - tarrant, krakouer, Davis
Out - Goldsack, Brown, Maxwell
