I don't think he should have won it but Goodwin just doesn't get the accolades he deserves, every game West had 30+ posessions he polled votes, Goodwin as they said couldn't buy a vote, should have finished in the top with his season!! Unlucky on West though, was going for him over Goodes!!

Goody never polls well and IMHO he is not as noticable as West. He gets a lot of touches but you sometimes get surprised he got it that many times.

He definetly should have polled better though. Getting overlooked against Hawthron after he had 38 touches and was noticable was quite laughable.

Just out of interest, would be be the team that had most players poll votes? We would go close.

Shouldve recieved 2 or 3 Votes in the Sydney, HAWTHORN and Melbourne games. Probably 3,2,3

Wouldve taken him up to 18 or 20 which would've been fair.

He dominated every one of those games plusmore and he got diddly squat, proves how much the umpires know.

Obviously the umpires don't notice him for whatever reason. Surely it's time that the umpires referred to the stats, in conjunction with their observations from the game, in deciding the votes. Otherwise players like Goody who for some reason don't stand out to the umpires, yet have had fantastic seasons are not being recognised for it :(

Quite often when Goody gets his touches they are in the middle and he gets the ball away quickly to another player after winning the hard ball via handball or kick. Whereas a Judd, Kerr, Cousins or West (etc) often runs while in possession (sometimes into the clear before disposing of the ball) hence attracting more attention.

We probably did have the widest spread of votes but I might be wrong, as for the most votes in one club would anyone disagree with WC? I dont know for sure.

Absolutely stoked for Mattner. He's definitely the type of player than gets noticed.

Cant believe how well marty has done last 2 years. If he has even a half decent season next year he could pinch it! Persoanlly i think he was pretty average this year. Umps obviously like seeing someone breaking the lines, running 50 metres and then realising he has forgotten what he is doing. Dont get me wrong i like Marty, but he needs to develop some smarts. Having said that im putting money on him beginning of next year! :D

mattner is terrible at least once a match
not being a troll

he just has those brain freezes when he gets on a long run

followed him with sturt and love him as a player, got us a flag but it kills me seeing him doing it. great player still however

people observe umpires not being able to decipher what is happening 10 metres in front of them on the field........then expect them to be able to put crayon to butchers paper in a sensical fashion after the event....??!!...

I think that's asking a little too much.....

Well done to Goodes - bad luck to West.......and Goody - get down to Bilo and select a less subtle rinse.....;)

He wasn't born as close to the Victorian border as Mattner was. :D

Interesting article:

Williams: I want justice
26 September 2006 Herald-Sun
Daryl Timms and Jon Anderson

FORMER Carlton champion Greg Williams yesterday instructed his lawyers to prepare a submission to the AFL commission over the circumstances surrounding the Brownlow Medal votes in Round 10, 1993.

Diesel robbed: Monday's Herald Sun.
Williams' lawyers will ask the AFL to review the voting procedures in the game.

The request follows a startling revelation this week from umpire Murray Bird that he wanted to award Williams votes, but claims senior umpire Peter Russo ignored his advice and awarded them to three other players.

Williams, who had 44 possessions in the game against Melbourne, lost the Brownlow Medal to Essendon's Gavin Wanganeen by one vote.

Although there have been other players who have surprisingly not received votes in games, Williams says his case is completely different because an umpire had wanted to award him votes.

``There was no consensus so it was done against the rules,'' the two-time Brownlow medallist said.

``I always knew something like this had happened. I just want justice.''

Bird claimed that when he suggested Williams be given votes, Russo asked him if the mid-fielder had made their job any easier.

Bird said no and claimed Williams had given them a hard time during the game.

But Russo has denied having that conversation with Bird, a Queensland based umpire who officiated in 43 games from 1990-94.

Williams said that based on Bird's claims and irrespective of his 44 possessions, he should have been given votes.

``I don't give a stuff what anybody says, I should have won three Brownlows,'' he said.

And Rod Ashman has some credits when it comes to the Brownlow Medal and for him a Williams 44-possession game would just about guarantee three votes.

Ashman was beaten by just one vote in the 1981 Brownlow, polling 21 votes, one behind joint winners Barry Round and Bernie Quinlan.

While his Carlton senior coach in David Parkin readily admits Williams' 1993 Round 10 is vague in his memory, Ashman recalled it last night as a ``typical Williams game''.

``You would have to say 44 possessions, particularly coming from the hand or foot of Greg Williams, would be a fairly significant contribution,'' said Ashman, who played 236 games (370 goals, two premierships in 1981-82).

``It surprised me that one of the officiating umpires in that game, John Russo, said he didn't notice a lot of Williams' handballs. We could certainly see them.

``I'm sure umpires took it into account when awarding votes if you were personal in abusing them.''

When Williams ran second in the 1993 Brownlow Medal to Essendon's Gavin Wanganeen, beaten by one vote, Danny Corcoran was the Bombers' football manager.

He recalls the night and as great as he knows Williams was, says he wasn't surprised when Wanganeen won.

``Later in the year at training a lot of people around the club started calling Gavin `Brownlow'. It became embarrassing for him,'' Corcoran said.

``I can't remember him ever playing as well again. His attack, recovery and speed from the back pocket added a new dimension to football.''

I'd love to see Russo pay for his bias............but bloody hell - what a can of worms that would open.....

MD!! What are you saying!!

You know that umpires don't do that because that would be cheating, and KG has told us over and over that umpires don't cheat!!

Wanganeen didnt win his clubs B+F in 93 did he?

I disagree, Goody doesn't get anywhere near the amount of hard ball and inside ball as Scott West, yet Westy seems to poll well every year ;)

V Melbourne (Round 3)

"

Goodwin was second-best. He had a game-high 34 disposals, won eight clearances and put on three tackles.

The umpires' second preference in Brownlow voting went to . . . Adelaide key forward Ian Perrie. The "Sarg" had 10 touches, took seven marks and kicked a behind. He will not be in the top 10 in Adelaide's voting for the Malcolm Blight Medal"

  Can You believe that, freakin unbelievable

Mattner did bloody well. When he puts his head down and carries the ball he'll get more noticed in those matches. If he gets some consitency into his game....He could poll well.
