The one thing which annoyed the heck out of me about Brendon Lade as a ruckman and his under study at Port, Dean Brogan, was/is the constant looking at the opposing ruckman when going for the ruck tap, which incidentally leads to a huge ratio of free kicks.
After having it pointed out that it is a growing trend by all of our ruckman , I have taken great interest in the Coburg game, and it appears all of our ruckman now look at the opposing ruckman regularly at centre bounces and give away a huge amount of free kicks as a result, can anyone tell me why ?

A few different reasons.

Basically the three ways to beat an opposing ruck attempting to leap and win the tap is to either:

a) Leap earlier, and push off opponent, or
b) Avoid opponent (who leaps early trying to do (a)), and get the clear tap.
c) Block space at fall of ball, 'sheparding' opposing ruck out of the contest.

The issue, is that 1 and 3 are (Sorry, can be) infringements, and 2 relies on the opposition attempting them.

(Whistle) - Early leap.
(Whistle) - Blocked his run.

Unless the umpires correct their interpretations, then the best method will always involve knowing where your opponent is. Unfortunately that involves looking at them, which SHOULD mean a free against for contact (not looking at ball), but rarely is unless you play for particular teams.

At the moment there are so many infringements in ruck contests, that the most influential person at the contest is the umpire.

So all you can do is get a 'name' ruckman, become a team that gets extra frees - or just accept the fact that your ruckmen are working at a significant disadvantage and vent at the rule-makers.

Yes it appears that the virus has spread to Derryx as well.

I can handle it if its a virus, the coaching staff / club will be looking to cure.
My concern is, that it was indicated , that it is a direction from the coaching staff, in particular B.L. ?:rolleyes:

One of the problems is both Graham and Deryckx are under-sized. As a result they have to be aware of where the opposition ruckmen are, to try and take position - because if they don't have perfect postion they are too small to just reach over and still get a hand to the ball.
