Is there a ruckman currently on a AFL list we can target at seasons end?

Jolly is on his last legs and may well be in his last season, he is struggling with the pace of the game at the moment.
Wood, who Buckley described as not a professional when it came to being an AFL footballer, during the week, just isn't up to it. Was given his chance in a big game and failed miserably. I think the patience with him is nearing the end.
Witts / Ceglar will take a good couple of years to develop so both aren't ready for senior footy at this stage.
So what happens if Jolly retires and Wood is given the flick, we will need an experienced ruckman to assist Witts and Ceglar in 2013.
What about a Seaby from Sydney or a Warnock from Carlton?

The only way we're going to be able to trade for a CERTIFIED ruckman is if we give up a high draft pick or a good player.

And let's not do that AGAIN.

I still have hope that Jolly or Wood will make it at AFL level, even just barely, just to pave the way for Ceglar and Witts when they come onto the scene in possibly 1-2 years.

We need to retain our draft picks because this upcoming draft is supposed to be one of THE best and to fill whatever holes we have in our list, which we will no doubt have coming to the end of the year.

I think we will make a play for Warnock or another experience ruck next year.

Was at the game and there was one play were Gibbs out marked Woods. He doesn't seem to use his height to advantage in the one on ones when he goes forward. He doesn't appear to read the play all that well when his the resting ruck on the forward line. Unlike a Hampson or Kruz. Unfortunately this happens to often with him.

I think Woods needs to play 5-6 games without being dropped every second week. To be fair on the guy.

Cam Wood came in and played in a game where our mids were smashed. Yes he wasn't great, but for a big guy like him the difference between playing at Vic Park and the MCG in front of a huge crowd with the lift in intensity would've been huge.
I say we give him a good 6 weeks to prove himself. He can take a mark, he does look to use the ball decently and he definitely can jump at the centre bounces, unlike Jolly.
I did not see that he was utterly hopeless tonight. I expected that he wouldn't rip the game apart, but we need to have faith. Build his confidence, it wasn't his fault we lost.

It would have been nice if we had of gone for Shane Mumford instead of Jolly a couple of years ago though! dont reckon we would've paid a first round pick for him either! I think Jolly is severely overrated. Good battler, nothing more.

I would love to see Ceglar get some games but I don't think he is at the Stage where he can play Week In and Week Out at AFL Level and Not sure how he would go against the Top Ruckman at his Young Age

Out of interest, what would you offer?
Because it would have to be a hell of a lot.

Unless he wanted to leave he won't be going anywhere. I don't think we have much to offer what you guys would want.

I thought one of GWS or GC are keen on him? There is a lot more on offer there that you would like to get your hands on.

WTF? ...

One of those is a two time premiership ruckman! How much more does he need to do to "make it at AFL level"?

The other one is in his eighth year in the system and still can't hold down a regular spot! Sure, big blokes take longer to develop, but geez, how long do you give a guy to "make it at AFL level"?

----

It's a fair question about who will ruck in 2013.

But it seems mighty strange to be talking about recruiting another one given:

(1) We have had a forest full of tall timber the last 2 or 3 seasons. Let's leave Witts out of it because it's too early in his development. But Shae and Keeffe were both recruited with the ruck in mind, but seem to be (scoff) not considered suitable anymore. What happened? Neither had played junior AFL. Did we think we could train them up to be ruckman? If so, why didn't it work out? Is there a disconnect between what our recruiters and coaches think qualifies a kid as ruck material?

(2) If any club knows of the importance of a ruckman it should be ours after what we went through nearly all of the 2000's. Granted, we've hardly had riches of good draft picks lately, but geez, we do have a herd of giraffes on our list and no viable ruck! WTF?

(3) In 2013 Ceglar will be in his third year in the system. If he's ever going to make it as a ruck, he'll be expected to step up next year.

If we chase a ruckman at the end of the year I'll be seriously pissed off!! All through the week the VFL thread has been dominated by talk of being to tall. We have the players there just be patient and wait for them to develop.

The only three that could be on the market are Griffin at Freo, Bellchambers and Warnock. All three of those will cost a top 20 pick and with our drafting history (one top 20 pick since 06) that is the absolute last thing we need to do!

FWIW we really have a decent mix in the two's with a competitive beast in Witts, a rangy player with a leap in Ceglar and your stereotypical ruck/ forward in Gault.

Wood's first game back from injury in a game where the Pies were thrashed all over the ground and playing against 2 ruckmen that jump well. I'm not sure how anyone can think that means Wood has had his chance and it's all over. He'll play more, he'll need to do better (and I'm tipping he will) but I think this is another case of people overreacting after a loss.
