From a technical point of view, I have to say the governments decision to do it itself and construct a high speed internet company is something that should have been done a long time ago and I'm all for it :D

Glad to see Telstra will come up against someone else in it's own weight division finally :p

amen amen aaaaaammmmmmeeeeeeennnnnnnnnn

Meh, its going to take them 8 years to construct a broadband network which wont be as fast as some other countries networks today.

Am I the only one that thinks there are probably more important things to worry about than this? Don't get me wrong I use the net every day and do my fair share of downloading and then some, but speeds aren't that bad. I'm guessing they're addressing to a wider audience than just the typical internet user.

high speed comms are a very important part of a modern economy. it crosses all sectors, it's not just people downloading pr0n.

high speed connections allow rural doctors/health workers to connect to specialists in major centres to discuss patients. ie Alice Springs Hospital has a cat scan machine but the only specialists they get visit every so often. so they can take a cat scan, fire the images down the line live, talk to the specialist and get a diagnosis on the spot. this can be seriously life saving. even between specialists in major centres it would be more than useful. medical data can be watched live if necessary for people awaiting transfer to a major hospital.

there are a whole bunch of thing you probably haven't thought about. ie Mobile broadband becomes faster because the backchannels between towers and between the towers and the internet backbone becomes faster.

video conferencing becomes viable and high quality for all businesses.

pay TV can be taken off satellite and put onto the fibre, this will stop it disappearing off the air every time it rains. a decent monsoon here kills it for weeks.

etc etc etc

It should have happened 10 years ago, but we had a Government whos only infrastructure project was to upgrade a train line from Adelaide to Darwin.

I hope it gets up and works, because Australia needs this.

Below is an artist's impression of the proposed National Broadband Network:

And below is the report of the Senate inquiry into this proposal:

I have changed my mind we dont need fast internet its too hard
Lets just put up with what we have.
Lets not try because we will fail.
I disagree with the political party thats in power now and so I also disagree with fast internet.*

*This is what makes Australia great
