I have heard the rumour that there is a group who is trying to save the South Dragons, and use a similar model to Cairns and Wollongong and make it a community run basketball club. It would obviously need to raise the money through community donations.

This would abviously mean two teams in Melbourne again which i believe is good for basketball. But there is really only two option. Go down this path or get another rich man to start up a team and throw heaps of cash at it, then leaves it for dead. Hope this is true as it would mean us supporters would finally have the chance to control our team and possibly to have a sustainable team that lasts more than three years.

But what do you think about it?
Would you donate to the cause?
Would you support the Dragons?

Even if the south dragons are saved and become a team again, they have pissed away (imo) the very good work they've done for the past four years in establishing a brand, fan base and building a playoff caliber team. The 'new saved' south dragons team will have to start from the bottom again and thats going to cost whomever a lot of money for new players and promotion.

No. No. No.

The Dragons have chosen not to be in the NBL for a reason, and it's not primarily finances.

Cowan has identified that the "new" NBL will clearly still be a joke competition and so has decided his organisation will sit out.

Yes I am aware of that, but this possibly new group would be buying the name of Cowan and Germinder and starting completely seperate from the previous ownership group.

And I understand Peter that it would be a whole new playing team, but wouldnt that be better than a whole new name ect, or no team at all??
