just a question..
who would be the best running backman we have had at the club?
i think that for the early 00s Leon Cameron was vital for us, and his skill and abilty to spot targets and set up the play (either side of body)
was as good as it got..

thoughts......

Leon was awesome but Joel Bowdens last few years take it to a new level. Even though he has had to play KP his run out defence has been awesome. After watching training so far this pre season Casserley looks like he will be pretty good at it in a few years when he gets a bit bigger.

Joel took running backman to a different level because he started from the full back line as opoosed to half back. Expect to see him manned in 2007

Travis Caserley will be the best one at our club in the future.

Joel Bowden is the best one right now, he is brilliant at his role but unfortunetely he was required to do too much last season, this season we'll see more running brilliance from him.

JB by far...just so consistent and damaging

yes very true.. very consistant and can be very damaging..
but do you not feel that leon was alot more damaging....
leon had both feet as well.. was great on either side of the body!!!

True, but JB is better IMO. Gives us more versatility too.

With the addition of Polak hopefully with his head screwed on, he will allow JB to go to the HBF and all the doubters can see how good he is

.

massive call that considering every second player or even two out of every three that TW recruits appears to be a "running back"...can't say ive seen much from him other than an odd shot in anger during a nondescript coburg game on ABC...here's hoping for some improvement bw seasons

JB's poise and class is unmatched coming out of defence. Next - Raines, a real dasher that isnt afraid to run staright through tackles

I think that's part of the reason he plays CHB. You can't man him up if he's playing on guys like Fevola, or you'll crowd the forward line.

FWIW, I made a point of watching Bowden from ground level behind the goals in one game when he was playing on Fevola last year. Say what you like about Joel, but the fact is his awareness is just amazing. Sums up the situation better than anybody else I've seen, and he has enough time to play off his man at the right time, be manned up when it counts, AND keep an eye on the rest of the back line and instruct his team mates when required.

He walks a pretty fine line in that role, and he rarely runs in the wrong direction. If he did, he'd have a bag kicked on him every week.

He's easily the best running backman that Richmond's had.

Merv Keane would be one of the best if you go back to the 70s and 80s. Played 238 games and was Mr Reliable throughout his career.

The General Joel:thumbsu:
although i rate bowden extremely high, from an oppositions point of view, as a very intelligent backman, he should now not be played on the key forwards with the addition of polak into your squad, best suited to a HBF where he can finally be freed up and push up the ground alot more than in recent times (not criticising his form) but it will prove a better outcome for your defence, yet it will be a gutsy move considering he is your best backman to date and polak is still unproven.

P.S. The tag 'The General', there is only one and his name is James Clement, arguably the most 'complete' backman in the league.

It's hard to measure guys out of their own time...

Merv Keane could go....
I loved Leon but we got him too late...

And today's football seems to be made for Joel Bowden...

It's like trying to compare forwards I guess....
(But the one thing I remember with Michael Roach was he never got the 'yips' as bad as Richo.......gee I was spoilt as a kid!!)

Anyone else remember looking through the footy record as a kid and seeing our all conquering Seniors, Reserves and under 19's Lists.......ah........those glory days.....
