yeah sounds like the shorter events will be Saturday so they can increase fields for HM and Full. Don't mind that at all, but they need to so something about the course, and removing the merging of the fields at the end, and i wish they'd provide that info before the close of ballot so I can actually make an informed decision before forking out $200+.

Agree 100%.

The more I read this thread and the more I think about it, I’m inclined to give it a miss and do something else.

If I could see the route now and have the information at hand, I might sign up but there is too much up in the air.

For anyone looking at another mara option... Geelong is having it's first Mara next year. Prices are at their cheapest until November 30 as well.

If nothing else should be a good atmosphere hopefully with a new event, we have 7 or 8 from my Run Club at this stage signed up so hoping to have a good pack going on the day supporting each other (with a few first timers, so my plan is to run and enjoy it as a 42k long run and not kill myself pushing for a PB)

I'm doing the half. Looks like a great half marathon course and didn't particularly like the extra 21 added to make the full mara. Also not 100% on doing a full next year. Wanting to improve speed and do more events l, rather than long marathon blocks. If I do one, will most likely be sunshine coast.

Despite my whinge and gripe at the shortcomings of this year's event, I too have joined the ballot for Melbourne this year... yes even with the final kick in the nuts of a price rise. Missing out on Sydney will do that to you.

Quietly confident that next year's event will be improved. Splitting it out to two days I feel is a good move although it will take away some of the 'vibes'.

The backup plan if I miss out on another ballot is Perth which is held on the same day. If you have issues with the Melbourne course going up St Kilda road, this is nothing compared to going through a 2km tunnel. Bleak.

Being a local runner, what do you make of the marathon course?

I had a look at the map, there are big sections along the water, a couple of up and back parts and some elevation gain but not a lot, but otherwise it doesn’t mean much to me as I have not spent much time in Geelong over the journey.

The elevation will be tough, as there are few steep bites to go up. The toughest part is the 15 or so Km where you leave the gardens, head towards Leopold, then out to Point Henry and back into the gardens as it will be boring as bat shit out that way and super exposed if windy... Which I guess is the same as the beach road section of Melbourne but at least there are plenty of people around there.. For Geelong that will go out to an industrial area on a hwy so not exactly exciting.

I had no interest in it off the course alone to be honest, doing it with friends, it being year 1 of a new event and the fact my family and kids can cheer me on easily and be at the finish have swayed me to do it

It will be cool running some of the parts around the waterfront and through the city centre that being said.

anyone see any good Black Friday deals i feel we should share, since we are probably all a fiend for a good shoe deal.

Adidas has 40% plus 10% if a member, I was very very tempted to get some Pro4s for $196... but i worry i am a heel striker and they won't be good for me so haven't pulled the trigger

I was super tempted by the pro 4s for under 200 bucks. Only thing that stopped me is I have a pair with 40kms on them, plus a pair of 3s with about 400kms that I use for sessions and another pair of 3s with 100km on them.

I was pretty proud of myself for my restraint as I love the look of the ones with purple stripes. Have that colourway in the Evo SL (2nd pair) already which also helped me to hold off. I will probably buy the terrex (to reward myself for my restraint) which are at the same price (360 down to 196). The only other shoe I'm potentially buying at present is megablast if a deal pops up, which is probably unlikely.

I did the Perth half this year and I liked the tunnel. I thought it was pretty cool since it's the only chance I'll ever get to be in there on foot (hopefully!)

It was about the only shadey segment on the whole course too.

Gents, need some advice. In Melb for the week, working in Tullamarine & Thomastown. Looking for accommodation with some run friendly trails, paths. Ran along the M80 trail staying on Mahoneys rd last time l was down and still have depression. Where could l base myself?

How about inner north, such as Fitzroy North, Carlton North or Brunswick?

Great areas with bars, restaurants etc.

You can then hook up to the Capital City Trail, Princes Park, Royal Park trails and you are on the right side of the city to drive out to Tullamarine and Thomastown.

I ran in the Run for the Young Marathon yesterday down in Lilydale VIC, conditions weren't great with the rain, the run started off at Lilydale College and 95% of the run is on the Warburton Trail which is a gravel track, and its and out back so the gravel track was a little chopped up on the return leg with all the rain. just over 400m of elevation, the first 8km mostly uphill and slight downhill and then upill on the way back. The 34km to 38km was tough approx 80m of elevation across the 4km. nice little downhill in the last 4km to pick up some time. Finished in 3;28 which was my aim to finish with the 3:30pacers.

Perfect mate. Have stayed on Flemington Rd. Enjoyed running around Royal & Princess parks. Much nicer than the concrete in the north. 👍

Unsuccessful in the ballot for the Melbourne half :( have raced the half or full for the last three years and was hoping to continue that streak.

I'm sure I'd be able to get a ticket on resale or something as people get injured. But I'm petty so part of me is like "nah **** em I'm not playing their game, gonna do another race". My partner was like "oh well, at least you can just cheer your friends on" but the fomo would kill me haha.

Yeah I missed out too. Have run a Melb Mara event every year for probably the past 15. Current Running popularity is insane.
