What is the official reason for his delisting last year?
I don't think clubs give official reasons, do they? In any event too old and too slow.

Did Pies fans agree with it?
Yes, although many don't.

Where is he now?
He played in the NT during the summer. Last I heard he was offered a place in a suburban team which he was considering.
 
Rupe was probably delisted because he wasn’t going to get any better and in MM's opinion he wasn’t in the best 22 now and would be overtaken by juniors in the near future. I disagree on most counts. I would have played him in the GF and I would have him in the 22 most weeks. Right now he would be a better player than at least half a dozen in the side. How he was delisted and Williams and Kinnear retained has me baffled. It can only be put down to MM playing favorites which I guess most if not all coaches do. I might add that plenty of Collingwood supporters would disagree with me that Rupe should have been retained. It is true that he won't get any better. Nor will Buckley, Rocca, Burns and plenty of other. Rupe isn't in their league but he is good enough to perform a role in a premiership side IMO and as far as I’m concerned that is the bottom line and is what should decide whether a player gets delisted. I'm happy to trade these types for something else to fill a hole but delisting him seemed to me to be a mistake even before we had the injuries we have had.
 
At least Betheras had a crack, wasn't scared to take a hit and wanted the footy in his hands. Unlike, Messrs Lonie, Cole, Shaw, Slightly Seeable Light Davis and not soft unlike all the above and Woewodin..... He is in your best 22 atm...

I wish Rupe was still with us, he seemed to be a hard worker and had a lot of spirit.

Malthouse has been shuffling through 22-27 year old middling/recycled players rapidly in his time at Collingwood to supplement and protect the stream of youth running through the place. Guys like Clement, Holland, Wakelin, Steinfort, Licuria and Betheras were picked up to shield the developing bodies of Cole, Didak, the Clokes, the Shaws etc.

I guess those guys had a role to play but they weren't going to be retained as "project" players, ie kept on the list for our years in the hope that they reach first 18 standard. If they didn't mature now, they were on a very short expiry date.

I guess Rupert was in our best 24 and not our best 18, and he wasn't in a "growth phase" ie he wasn't showing huge potential for improvement. Steinfort was delisted for the same reason I guess.

Clement has improved to be a top 10 player for us, Licuria won 2 Copelands, Wakelin has improved out of sight and is now our no 1 dbig defender 9in Presti's absence). The policy has worked well there, those "second tier" guys basically carried our star 4 (Buckley Rocca Tarrant Burns) to two GF's.

It is worth comparing Betheras to Holland and Kinnear.

Holland was a one dimensional player when he came to us, and went through a form slump worse than Rupert's. However he showed some initiative and requested a midfield/tagging role which he has filled adequately. Rupert probably didn't have that versatility, despite having a superb work ethic.

Kinnear was kept on because he is tall, fit and works hard. He has so little talent it isn't funny, but he has the two things Malthouse loves in a player: obedience and fitness.

Disagree. Don't need another low skilled average paced tagger. He basically didn't play much until the finals in 2002 where he did his job and that's about it. the only thing collingwood's midfield needs is a pace & skill player - a Judd or Aka type.

Still love Funky. Great bloke (nice folks too), and his trade brought us Josh Hunt, a tank of a kid who will be a quality defender for 10 years.

Funky, the Steinfort that keeps on giving.

No offence, but you seem to have a fixation with players who aren't really good enough for AFL (eg SANFL Gowans x 2). I don't think a guy who didn't dominate VAFA B grade would fit into the side.

To be fair though, alot of guys on the list at the moment wouldn't dominate VAFA B Grade. :(

they're the biggest thing since sliced bread surely ,call me Suzi, but this is more a personal thread than a Collingwood thread.

No one has confirmed what I've heard on a "mate of a mate" basis, but it's not for me to be starting rumours ;)
