Perhaps his opportunity is yet to come. Didn't do Barlow any harm missing a draft or two. How he mentally overcomes this setback may determine his future. I'm not saying Freo knocked him back deliberately but perhaps they feel he needs another year in the WAFL. I thoughts it was strange when they indicated to the AFL that they MAY take him as a FS rookie pick. I would suggest he's been told to go back, work hard and maybe next year.

He missed the second half of the season with injury. I don't think that would have helped his cause and the fact that he was unable to test at the combine because he was still recovering. If Duffy doesn't show something this year they may decide to push him out in favour of Lester-Smith.

I'd have thought if they wanted him they'd have rookie listed him, give him time to develop down at Peel. Seems a strange move given he was the player singled out to be almost a certainty to be on our list in some capacity in 2014.

By whom?
We had more pressing needs this year. A good injury free season for EF and things could easily change next year for Ryan/.

Despite earlier flagging their interest in East Fremantle forward Ryan Lester-Smith, the Dockers couldn't find a spot for him on their rookie list.
Fremantle nominated Lester-Smith as a rookie father-son player during the trade period, just as Collingwood did with Craig Kelly's son, Jake.
But neither club selected them yesterday. Kelly eventually joined Adelaide at pick 40 but Lester-Smith was overlooked.
AFL spokesman Patrick Keane said the rules were designed for clubs to get early access to a father-son player before the rookie draft if he wasn't chosen in the national draft. But he said unlike father-son selections in the national draft, clubs hadn't committed to putting those players on the list.
Sharks football manager Darryn Fry said Lester-Smith was disappointed.
"We probably planned that we wouldn't have him for 2014 but you do know there's no guarantees," he said.

To me it looks like Bondy was surprised by who was and wasn't taken in the later parts of the national draft and the rookie draft. As such he got a couple of players our recruit team rated highly and thought would be gone.
For my part i am still a little surprised that we took Grey when Marsh was there as a big mid. And I really like the look of the rookies but in looking Ballas i thought he would have gone earlier to an eastern states team.
I think there was no malicious intent just we did not rate RLS as highly as we rated others which is why it was always a "may" for the father son thing. As the recruit staff I would be off to see RLS this week to tell him he was close and if he recovers well and put in the yards he will go next year.
