I reckon he could be an excellent tall back similar to Michael Johnson (Freo) but better. Has the height, skills and poise. If he can stack on a few kg I think he could be an interesting proposition.

Thoughts?

nah, i would rather let him develop into a quality ruckman.

Johnson is much more explosive than ryder. Ryder moves well but lacks that burst to be a good defender. He's a pure ruckman that may be able to play forward on occasions.

Johnson is more agile at this stage. Poor comparison. Ryder is more like a young Peter Everitt, just thicker in the hips and legs. If he couldnt make it in AFL, Id be convinced he would make a great basketballer.

He will take time to develop but will turn into a gun. apparantley he beat Leunberger in the ruck at the 05 nationals. he wouldnt have been picked at #7 if he wasnt a gun.

Depends of who's reports you read if he did beat Leunberger. Lawrance Angwin was drafted at pick 7. Other things can come into it before he is a gun

essendon have some pretty nice rucks coming through, laycock, Bradley and Ryder as well as Hill. Bradley might be a little bit small with the new rules but there's a lot to work with there.

Bradley isn't really a ruckman, and he's taller than Ryder.

Although Paddy could grow a little.

Actually no it doesnt , there where some false reports floating around about the two of them. The fact of the matter is Ryder was the number one ruckman for WA in the 2005 champs and Leunberger was the number two.

Yep but would that be more to do with the fact that Ryder was a year older and was his last year before the draft? Seeing Leunberger would have only been turning 17 that year and Ryder 18?

Ryder didn't turn 18 until just before the 2006 season started. He's still 18.

Leuengerger turned 18 less than three months later.

Like Longy and Dave have said there is only 3 months difference between them age wise.

does this mean that luey is overated or that ryder is underated, everyone has said that in any other draft luey would of gone 1, but if ryder is better and same age then why wasnt he taken as a top 3 pick in the 05 draft.

I can't stand watching Ryder, to me he looks like he isn't trying and that he just runs around from ruck contest to ruck contest instead of trying to get a kick or chassing his player. Was his body language the same in the 18's tryouts and that and he really is trying his guts out without looking like it?

I know this will stir the pot but it's just how it looks to me.

I think it is a little bit of both. Apparantley leuy is the next cox, but i reckon ryder is underrated.

No I agree with you, he looks like he isn't trying. But I think it is just how he looks, not how is playing though.

I don't want much from Ryder next season, but I do want him to show glimpses, many glimpses if possible of good footy next year. I don't think he has shown any at AFL level just yet.

Well what did you want from him an all star performance. If you really think he wasnt trying then you have lost the plot. There was no way he was ever going to match the experienced ruckman or be able to read the play at AFL level and have the fitness to go with ruckman that have had a few years in the system. He only played a few games because of the limited options with Laycock out injured. Of course he was trying, the fact of the matter was he simply was and isnt ready yet.

Hasnt shown anything with his around the ground work but he wasnt expected to star in that area at this stage. I thought that some of the tap work he came up with was perttey good for a young kid.

I thought his tapwork was quite good for kid his age. Its pretty hard to speculate on the kid when he's only played a handful of games.

for the record, Brownlow medallist Scotty Wynd was pretty ordinary when he came onto the scene for the Doggies. Took him a while to hit his straps, until he became a premium ruckman. He was skinny, very uncoordinated and barely positioning himself well in contests. History shows, that all changed as he developed in match experienced. I think all this criticism is unwarranted on such a young man.

I was just agreeing that it looked as though he wasn't trying, not that he wasn't trying. Many players look the same way, it's not a bad thing.

I know not much was expected of him this year, he's a ruckman, he will take time. I have no problems with his development in his first season of AFL. I don't expect much from him at all, 10-12 games would be fine by me, even less. And in some games where he shows little glimpses, where he does things that makes you think "Woah, he's going to be a player". An example of this, with Courtney Johns in the Collingwood game we won this season. The ball was bombed into the forward line, and he outmuscled Jason Cloke (shh) to take a fine one-handed mark. A great effort to show what he is capable of doing.

Not sure if this is making sense so I'll stop there.:o

Thats fully understandable, he looked a little lost at times and kind of meandered (sic) his way around the ground, but with time and consistent tutoring, hopefully, this will iron itself out. Rome wasn't built in one day. ;)
