Very, very fond of both of them (and any other work by the Finn brothers) but for me it's definitely Split Enz.

It's helped by the fact that I'm actually a bigger fan of Tim than Neil but it's mostly that Crowded House have beautiful, melodic songs that just draw you in but Split Enz had that, plus a vibrancy and uniqueness. I consider the Enz a more challenging, interesting and enjoyable band.

That's because you were running around in nappies as the band neared the end of it's lifespan.

Seriously, if you like Crowded House so much, do yourself a favour and check out some Split Enz stuff. I guarantee you you'll love it. There's a number of "best of" type compilations out that are a good place to start. Don't dismiss the Enz just because you don't know their music.

Well said. I think Split Enz had a few more rough edges; by the time Crowded House came around, Neil Finn had smoothed those rough edges away to a large extent.

(Re: Message to My Girl) Yeah, that's a great, great song. I'm generally not a big fan of ballads, but I'm just powerless to resist that number. Just awesome.

Agreed. I actually preferred Wally Matera to Peter Matera.

I'm more a Split Enz fan and I much prefer the early stuff (Yes!that old cliche). My favourite album is Dizrythmia followed closely by Mental Notes. I also have a soft spot for Frenzy(being one of the twenty three that bought it when it originally came out - even before Mushroom tacked "I see red" onto it in an effort to increase sales)
I remember the first time I saw Split Enz doing "Maybe" on Countdown and to say it was "out there" for 1975 is an understatement.
Crowded House never did it for me. I tried to get into them - just couldn't.

Being 18 split enz were a bit before my time so i just knew crowded house. But ever since I've tried to fill up my mp3 player with dads albums that I'm willing to try out I've been impressed with Split Enz. I sometimes find Crowded House a bit dull but Split Enz is very quirky and completely different to anything we're used to now. Both fantastic bands, and i can't split them, but am a fan of both.
