You’ve backed the wrong horse here …. anyone not supportive of whatever measures are possible to stop the level of abuse directed at umpires at grassroots level hasn’t seen what’s happening. The way umpires are treated by supporters, players and most worryingly coaches at grassroots level is an absolute disgrace. If umpires don’t ever want to get into the caper, the standard will continue to fall. So whilst I agree AFL umpires should be able to handle it there’s no doubt they can …. But 15yo’s getting yelled at by coaches and parents cannot handle it - and if they never take it up, the game we all Iove suffers as without umpires there is no game.

Go and watch some grassroots footy and maybe update your post. Keep in mind, the treatment so far in 2022 is far better than previous seasons… which was absolutely unforgivable the way young umpires are spoken to and abused.

2 different issues. disagreeing on this ludicrous arms out BS isn't saying that we agree with umpire abuse.

If anything, this will add to umpire abuse at every level.

Seriously the number of people getting their panties in a knot over this dissent rule.

The AFL do this all the time
- they send a 'shot across the bows' with a new rule by over-officiating it.
  • the players get the message, get used to it and - surprise, surprise - stop breaking the rule.
  • Umpires then stop over-officiating it.

Give it 2-3 weeks and we'll have all forgotten about it. It's a great rule and example to set the tone for how umpires should be treated at all levels instead of this faux-macho bullshit everyone carry's on with !!

Problem is, it can't be officiated. Each game, there's probably over 500 times players question a decision. Are the umpires going to call 500x 50's in a game? No. So either way it's officiated, it's impossible for it to be consistent. If there's any faux-macho BS, it's Brad Scott (BS).

It makes no logical sense. He doesn't realise that arms out isn't dissent.

You don't get it - there's 500 times players question a decision (or show dissent) because there's never been a rule to stop them !

Police this rule and that will stop - or do you think a player will keep giving four or five 50m penalties away each week because he can't stop himself because he's 'passionate' and 'plays on the edge'.

That player would last a week before his coach turfed him.

Maybe u should list your detailed reasons as to why Brad should be fired…

Maybe I misunderstood, but I was under the impression you can show disbelief in a call if the action is to self (raise arms, looking up to God for example), however, doing that action while looking at an umpire will result in a penalty.

I believe that it simply won't be possible to be enforced. okay, picture this. The ball goes into Melbourne's forward line, Tom McDonald marks the ball and is lining up for goal. He takes too long and the umpire calls play on. 100m away in the goal square Steven May gestures with his arms out in a 'that wasn't 30 seconds' gesture. Will the umpires see that? No. Will they be able to pay umpire dissent? No. Will they have to have a team of spotters all of the ground looking out for it? No. Do they need to pay it? Yes, it's aligned with their umpire dissent rules. Whether the umpire sees it or not, it's still umpire dissent. The fans see it. So it's a slippery slope.

It's literally impossible not to react. Your expectations suggest you've never played competitive sport. Imagine being in a final and a guy in the opposition gets the ball runs 50m without taking a bounce and kicks a goal from 50m. You expect the players to not react with a 'what the hell is going on'? The umpiring standard is already horrific. You've got guys like Weightman and Hawkins sucking in umps with flopping and now you expect them to have a 360 degree view of the field keeping an eye out for players with their arms up?

I played about 25 years of football (at a relatively high level) and that's why I don't buy the argument that it will be impossible to contain their reactions. The body and mind can easily adjust to these changes.

Elite cricketers or F1 drivers can make nano-second decisions on how to react.

I'm old enough that I lived through the introduction of the 'Kevin Bartlett rule' where you weren't allowed to bounce the ball just before you were tackled. This was probably the most significant change to the game in 60-70 years and the same type of people said - it can't be done, the players have grown up condition to this and will never adapt to the rule. In the initial half of that season (1978) we had players breaking the rule. By about round 12 we were all used to it.

Don't undersell how players can contain their reactions and emotions - or they don't play.

In your examples of dissent being shown 100 metres off the ball - of course, no, commonsense says that won't be able to be policed but that's not the ultimate intent. It's being over-officiated now to get the new message (and reactions) drummed in and the players trained and then will settle down.

We won't even be talking about by the mid-year break.

Hi danster, just curious to know how many signatures the AFL told you to get before they officially show him the door? I can see you're already up to 8 which is a fine effort, only a little more to go - is 20k the official number or purely aspirational?

If this works I propose a 'deregister Weightman and Macrae' petition to get them thrown out too.

lol it's not the number it's the principle. :) That's 8 people that have said their peace :)

No aspiring umpire is going to avoid taking up umpiring because of incidents like the Harris Andrews one last weekend. Or the Tom Mitchell one. Not one single umpire would be lost over incidents like those.

But quite a few supporters are saying it is the final straw for them, they are not going to matches/not watching/not watching other than games with their own teams any more. It is actually quite an investment in time and dollars to go to the footy and support your team or just watch a game because you are interested in it. So people are going to games and seeing an absolute farce play out due to a rule rushed in without sufficient thought or trial that doesn’t even recognise the obvious reality that most people gesture with their hands when they speak even in polite conversation.

Brad Scott is responsible for this and it is a stupid mess. When he came out this week to face the media over the issue, he did not even then in the face of huge scrutiny consider that while the motivation for the rule is right, and it is long overdue, the implementation of it is unrealistic, unfair and completely damaging to the credibility of the sport. If a final is decided because a player momentarily forgets you cannot lift your arm when even politely asking an umpire a question, the sport will lose credibility. Players need to be able to question the umpires. You might be full back with a strategy of playing from in front and you get the shove Harris Andrews got v Hawkins and you need to know if the ump has made an error or if he is going to allow that action to be used against you on that day, meaning you will need to alter your strategy. It is patently ridiculous to not penalise the player asking a question in a friendly tone who has his hands by his side, then penalising someone who who does the same thing but raises his hand slightly to support the question with some benign body language.

And an AFL season is not the time to be trial and erroring rules and messing up the implementation time after time with inconsistent application. It means way too much to too many people. As Barassi said, “practice makes perfect is bullshit, only perfect practice makes perfect.” Get the implementation right. That falls on Brad Scott, he is in charge of the rules and the interpretations and the umpires. And as it is playing out, those very important people in the scheme of the sport - the supporters - are being short changed. And they know it. Something like this probably requires change management expertise or a great instinct for detail on the part of the person in Brad Scott’s position. He clearly has neither and should not even be in the position.

This is beyond embarrassing the state of this dissent rule, it is a completely unrealistic mess and Scott clearly does not know what to do about it. This first half of footy played after all the focus on it this week just tells us all we need to know.

Get this ****ing clown out of that position for christ's sake.

Well, apparently pointing at the ground to indicate that is what the ball hit is also dissent.

If arms out is dissent, then every time the umps call for a ball up, they will look up and see blokes on the edge of the pack with arms out calling for a holding the ball for their team. Or, is that considered barracking? I guess it is up to the umps feelings according to Brad.

Brad used to be a footballer and a coach. Now he needs a hanky to wipe that corporate nose before he does his presser.

Sack Chris Scott too. Thanks.

I’d take just about anyone except Hinkley, Cameron, Neeld, Worsfold, Lyon or Roos
