The old man has perhaps been indulging in too many beverages himself. I wasn't convinced by an article a little while ago which said he was one of the league's best recruiters. Who has he got without a number 1 pick? Raph Clarke at pick 8? McQualter was a first round at 17 (in the same draft he picked up Ackland, McGough and Gwilt). What are the positives? He has been praised for not being afraid of left field choices, but both of these (Sweeney and Gwilt) have shown that the punt wasn't worth it. Maybe we should tank, he can only pick good players with picks 1 or 2...

As I pointed out in another thread, the draft that had Raph in it, had Sam Fisher at round 4. Every team in the league passed him up 3 times. At that young age the recruiters are only trying to pick the best potential, but they don't really have a clue.

Frankie - I've been critical of the club's recruiting and John Beveridge, but the club has looked to put extra people in the area and increase spending i.e. the issue is being addressed.

Whether or not I believe we should have traded for Wood, Macca looks like he will be at the standard within 12 months (his ground work is very good for a tall), and we traded the second pick.

Been in the Saints job just over 12 months. Terrible record previously to hang his hat on with Geelongs pathetic performances in 2007 a pointer.

There is a lot of luck in recruitment as well, Goodes, Cox just two superstars taken way down, in fact Cox was a rookie even.

Yes, it also dosn't help when draft picks are swapped for duds like Fergus Watts.
