Sexton has a wealth of football experience both as a player and coach. He had seven years playing at Port Melbourne before going on to coach Diamond Valley, Calder Cannons U/16 and U/18 plus was Head Coach at the Northern Knights before joining St Kilda as a Development Coach in 2006.

“Danny is a very insightful coach and will play an important role in the coordination of our defensive strategies,” said Watters.

These days it doesn't seem to matter how much AFL or how little AFL playing experience you have to be looked at as an assistant. It was always going to happen once clubs appointed more people to the football department.

At TAC level, many clubs started seeking out teachers to coach the development teams and these coaches moved up into Under 18 level as assistants and some find their way into VFL roles. Sexton was a teacher at a 'football school' in Keilor. I don't think Adam Potter, the senior coach at Coburg, has much if any high level playing experience. He started at the Jets (I think) at development level and moved up the ranks to it's affiliate Williamstown.

If you look at what Sexton was doing with the 'backs' in last night's segment, he was running it like a classroom. I lol'd but it IMO, teaching experience with some football knowledge gets you foot in the door. Show some commitment, know the right people, do the hard yards for a few, bullshit your way through interviews and BANG....you're on Friday Night Football.
