Do any of you fellow Tigers know or have a rough idea of the clubs Salary Cap situation?
I found it quite confusing and amusing a week or so ago when Miller said the club would be unable to afford a premium price when he was talking about attracting Jamie Charman to the club.
IMO we only have half a dozen premium footballers who should be on a large salary, and two of those Richo and Bowden I would think will both be on the vets list next season. Throw in Brown and Cogs who should have a revamp of the current contracts they have due to injury concerns come seasons end.The only other two who would be on a large contract would be Johnson and maybe Tivendale? As far as Simmonds is concerned we know he is not on the big bucks so to speak.
So where is the cash going, or was it a ploy by Miller?
Along with the Hawks and Carlton we should be well down on salary cap usage surely.

If we get first pick in the PSD then we have no choice but to go after a high priced star. If they dont I will be mega pi$$ed off. Also we should have huge leverage in the trade period as well. So two good players should come our way.

Judd + Riewoldt :p

It would pretty poor negotiating to say...'we are pretty flush with cash and have alot of room with our salary cap, so managers, come and talk to us and lets get the bidding going!'

At this point, we can only really target the high profile players coming off contract that have a very BIG charity attitute or, like the look of 2011, or were diehard Tiger fans as a kid....anyone in that category?

It might be disinformation, but GM had said we were aiming to be at 92.5% last year. The original reason was from circa 2004 and the club was broke.

I think that situation was used as an excuse to not pay players any more than we absolutely had to. It will no doubt come in very hand at the end of the year if true...

It's not an excuse, we were broke. We still have large debts, and the poor performance this year is going to have a negative financial impact on the club. Good to see sensible financial management in place finally.

In 2004 (was it?) we were broke. We simply could not pay more. Last year, I am not so sure. I agree we still have debt, and I am all for paying the minimum of the cap.

But hypothetically should Judd or any other star decide they want to play for Richmond next year, I think we could find the $$.

We should use any extra cap space we have this year to front end a few contracts for 5+ year required players (obviously not with 5+ year contracts).

Free up some cap room to bid for a genuine star when we'll need them - 2009/10 and after. By that time we'll have a much better idea of which part of the ground needs some topping up, and we'll be a more attractive club to come to.

Bowden cannot go onto the Veterans list till 2009 i think. But otherwise i agree our salary cap should be very close to the minimum.

Bowden is a vet in 2008.

2007 - Richo and Gaspar
2008 - Richo and Bowden
2009 - Richo, Bowden and Tivendale

....

we will probably then have 3 seasons without any until 2012-3. Yet another long-term problem hiding away waiting to bite us on the John Howard.

The problem with that plan is actually having to come up with the money.

It is all well and good saying we will pay and extra $500k this year to save us in the future - but where does that cash come from? As others have said our problem is not cap space - it is cash in our wallet.

A club has to make decisions. We have decided to invest $1m into recruitment and player development instead of into player payments. It is the sort of long-term investment that we have been crying out for.

If you guys are going as bad as it sounds here surely you must be entitled to the AFLs bonus that teams like the Roos and Dogs have recieved?

Thanks for the response people. I was unaware the clubs could take money from the players salary cap and use that in the football department, which is what some of the comments here are indicating to be happening at Tigerland.

My follow up to that is, have we not got one of the richest men in Australia wanting to throw his hat into the ring on the Tigers board next year?

Hey Crazy John, you are on the board next year mate how about throwing in a couple of million for the footy department so whe can go after guys like Judd and Reeeeevolt, or any other star for that matter thats available come seasons end. It is time for this club to go in for the kill, we have a plethora of youth coming through showing good signs and add to that some top line stars and who knows where the club could be in the next 2-3 years.

Good point Weaver! Everyone on here of late has been saying how we draft these highly rated younsters & they don't develop like we expect & would they have come on quicker at other clubs.Player development & recruitment upgrading will be of a big benefit to us
