With trade week coming up, I thought I would run a thread on the issue of the Salary Cap.

Does anyone know the official figure each club gets to spend?

Which Collingwood Player do you think is our highest paid? In my opinion, Didak is our best player, but he cant be on more than $450,000. I know Cloke, Thomas, Pendlebury and H Shaw will command more cash in the future, but at the moment..... where is our money going now?

In America, all player salaries (NFL, NBA and MLB) are released for public viewing, this is something I believe the AFL must adopt. Its funny how Melbourne, the worst side in the competition can't afford the $400,000 price tag on Warnock but Carlton can?

Apparently most of their players were out of contracts in 2005 and 2006 and unfortunately for them, they thought they were in contention for the flag (and why not, they were flying)

Long story short they signed them on huge contracts and they dropped to the bottom...they gonna have salary cap problems for the next year then it will be normal again


As for us...I'm not exactly sure but it would be around 95% of the cap...Rocca (Veteran) and Dids would be up there for highest paid

I feel sorry for Melbourne

They bottom out just when the draft becomes totally skewed towards the GC17 and WS18. They will be on the bottom for a long time and they simply don't have the $$$ to survive long term failure.

Josh Fraser and Travis Cloke are our two most paid players at the club. If you remember Josh was reluctant to sign at the end of last year because of fiscal issues so rumour has it his on about 400k and i think Clokey is in and around that also. Wouldn't be surprised if Dids is close to those figures either.

The only reason i can think of Chappo, is that this ensures clubs paying at least 92.5% of the cap means they actually have the money to pay them and are financially viable to at least be competitve on the field by proving they have at least 6milion a year for player payments and then the other costs come secondarily.

The best thing that could happen to our club is if we offloaded Fraser now for a 2nd round draft pick and picked up Jeff White for 2 years via the PSD.
We would save ourslelves 250k per year for the same output. By the time White retires Cameron Wood should be ready to take over the number 1 ruck duties.
Fraser is a prick. He cost us a flag by missing the 2007 prelim final with a mysterious back problem and then holds the club to ransom over summer knowing we had no other ruck options.
If we award him the captaincy i will be fuming.
