Just read the Wisby's profile on Sam Butler and he sound like Dean Kemp all over again. Hope I am not being sacreligious...

He's a witch, I say, Burn him! ;)

Any player who goes in the top 20 or so picks in the draft has a lot of quality- these are supposedly the best 20 kids in the country, if they didn't show a lot of promise, they wouldn't be drafted. Wisbey's profiles tend to be pretty cluey, but I'm still yet to hear him say 'Player X has minimal talent, and will linger on an AFL list for a few seasons, cop some niggling injuries, let fame go to their head, and spend so much time going to nightclubs and getting ****ed off his brain that they'll stop coming to training and get the arse in a season or so.

In rehab year 2, or sooner if he works harder.

..yet that is exactly what will happen to one or two highly rated players in this years draft. (' I suppose the point I'm making is that once upon a time, Trent Carroll, Kane Munro and Damien Adkins entered the league on the basis of equally promising draft profiles- every player drafted inside the top 25 picks got an equally positive wrap! I've no doubt Butler has a lot of promise, otherwise we wouldn't have drafted him, but its way way to early to decide how good he'll be.

Personally, I don't think its fair to give a youngster a 'the next... ..
tag before they even get on the field. Dean Kemp was a great player, but I'd prefer our pick #20 to be the first Sam Butler rather than anything else.

Now, what was I saying? Yes, Beau Waters, the next John Worsfold.... :D

Fair point and I guess I was not trying to say he is the next Dean Kemp but just that based on both his skills and the way he seems to go about his footy he seems very Kemp like.

uhuh.. I get the feeling that some of our midfielders we're drafting now are for a long time down the track- you've got two clean ball getters and playmakers in Nicoski and Butler, and a couple of hard men in Selwood, and probably Waters as our onball brigade with Seaby rucking to them, when Cousins is retired, and Judd the team's elder statesman and leader. Throw Sampi into the mix and you probably have the Eagles' midfield circa 2009. Weird prospect, isn't it?

hmm... if Cousins has another 6 or so years left in him, then when he retires (with 4-5 premiership medals of course :D) all of the above will be in the 23-25 aged range, Judd will be getting on to 26, and so will I! Scary thought, that is...

I think the WCE learned a lot from the 1993-1998 draft periods, and the lean years of 2000 and 2001 seasons. They have more long term plans in place, rather than the ever popular "3yr plan" that coaches have, which leads to recruiting for the moment.

These "3yr plans" are the reason why teams like Richmond and Hawthorn peak for a season or two, then fall away sharply back to their rebuilding phase. Whereas Brisbane has won 3 premierships straight and has some impressive youngsters coming through, its why Nth spent a decade at the top, yet have been in finals contention during their rebuilding period.

Having said that, it helps being a legend at the club you coach and knowing you have more time to build for the future without worrying about your job security.
