i'm sorry if anybody else has mentioned this (i went missing for a while) but does this guy remind you of simon black?

i'm not saying that he's as good or anything but just the way he plays the game is very blackesk.

also noticed an amusing pregnant swan thingy going on between he and chipper on the weekend.

yeh, sam is very popular player with the fans. alot of people have mentioned his likeness to black. they are very similar physically and in their playing style.

Very similar style although obviously there is an enormous gulf in their output at this stage- both have a fair amount of grunt around packs and are unbelievably precise and composed under pressure.

I have to say though, I haven't been hugely impressed with Butler so far this season- the quality of his touches has been very good, he always makes it count, but he just hasn't really had a big influence on any of our games so far.

I reckon he's a bit lucky to still be there ahead of Nicoski.

Possibly because of his interrupted pre-season i guess. Was looking really good before he got injured.

True that.

There are a few classy players on our list who either through injury or lack of preseason or whatever aren't having a huge influence at the moment, Butler, Seaby, Gardiner, McDougall, Matera, Nicoski.

Given the white hot form some of our topliners are in, it doesn't really matter if they take a while to get into it. But there's probably going to be some point this season when the guys who are playing great footy atm will lose form or get injured- its that point when people like Butler are going to have to carry the team.

he is getting less game time than he was last year. this year he has only been getting around 60min. last year he would push 70-80min. maybe the clubs still has queries over his match fitness. whenever you hear suma on the radio he is forever trying to pump up selwood and butler.

I was reading the paper yesterday and they were talking about players who have swapped sports to play AFL and they were talking about Butler's kicking. He says he has a very bad kick, Rob Wiley's been working with him alot on his kicking. He's improved on his right but is still shocking on his left, kicks like a soccer player

Used to be a pretty decent junior soccer player. Had trials with Man Utd as a 14 yr old.

I can relate to his problem, as I played soccer in my junior days and only converted to football as a 20yr old. Because of this late start, I had the soccer style 'hook' kick. In football you also hit the ball with a different part of the foot, which can make timing an issue at times. But if he has the foot/eye co-ordination to be a good soccer player, its only a matter of time until he can convert it to football.

Butler had some awful clangers yesterday. Time for him to go back to the WAFL and get some form.

Kerr should replace him next week.

He appears a bit slow to me. Can't tell yet if he is actually slow or if it's his relaxed demeanor that makes him look slow.

second year teenagers are never consistent. even judds second year was full of up and downs. unfortunately, due to the other fringers knocking on the door, butler probably isnt going to get a chance to keep his spot through his second year ups and downs.

give someone else a go. nicoski, i reckon
