Just looking for a few thoughts as to where people think he is at.
Has shown a bit of promise, but in my opinion he was very poor against Geelong, however his game against St Kilda was quite good.
Is the main opinion of posters of this board that he still has a lot of development left and will make it as a player?

Well IMO he did no wrong against Geelong, which is more than can be said for a lot of others.

was ok, i dont think he had as much game time this week.
considering nothing clicked for us yesterday and we only went down by 16 against the top side, it prooves that we arent that far away.

The problem with him is he is a fumbler. Not clean at all. Has decent foot skills and tries hard. He'll never be more than a decent AFL footballer, whether that means he is in or out of our 22 depends on the quality of the 22 we have out there. He isn't in our best though.

Apples is going along nicely.

Is a bit of a strange one though, he seems to be much better when he is under pressure than in the clear. Has done some sensational handballs to a player in the clear when he looked to be in trouble and fumbled and turned it over when he is in the clear. I think he should be groomed to take Brodie's (who has lost it) role in the midfield in 2008

Ordinary again against Geelong after a really good showing against the Saints. Time to see Ryan Cook who's been playing well in a similar HBF role.

My totally unscientific approach is that I haven't noticed him doing anything great but nor has he had any total shockers which is more than can be said for some against Geelong, so given the stage of his development the jury is definantly still out. Is he really expected to star as a rotating HBFer in his first few games?

Sam looks alright in space, uses the ball nicely, lacks defensive ability for mine. Seems to have good 'top' pace but lacks genuine 'first 10' speed. Seems to have very good skills by foot but decision making wavers under pressure.

Perhaps no better highlighted against Geelong where he was asked to match up on Selwood several times when given ground time and was absolutely carved a new one, looked alright when he had the pill but Selwood had a hell of a lot more of the pill and was seriously damaging. 'Also put the Selwood v Pendlebury rising star crap to bed nicely I thought.'

Still think he, (Iles) could be a good foot soldier for us but at the moment he looks far from the small defender, run with player they seem to be trying to turn him into.

At some stage this year we have to play Cook in the side (which means dropping Iles) because at the end of the season serious decisions have to be made as to who to keep on the list and who to drop off.
We know that Cook is cutting it at VFL level at Williamstown but we don't know yet if Cook can take his game to the next level at AFL. Same applies to Iles. Before the decisions are made we need to see both players playing at senior level and not just one or two games.
Personally I would like to keep both players for next year and see Licca retire and maybe Holland traded.

imo watching him at the game. When he had the ball he was good, BUT his defensive positioning and workrate when he had to follow the likes of ablett and chapman in rotation he really struggled. I often saw him 10m off his man when he recieved it. But that could be said for alot of the guys.

Seems to divide Collingwood fans this guy.

I am not a big fan, but I did miss the Saints game and apparently he did well that day.

I think he might be a little reluctant to throw his body in as well. Did anyone see in the 2nd quarter I think, instead of hitting the contest he waited for the Geelong player to get the ball and then tackle him. Its that kind of lack of commitment that can really deflate the team and spark the opposition.

He does have nice footskills and seems to find the footy a lot, especially at VFL level, so perhaps he is worth persevering with for another year.

Sam has showed a lot of positives, he will be a great player for us. Composure, Footy Smarts.

It's good to see him respond positively to being dropped. I'd be disappointed to see him delisted at this stage.

I thought his games against the saints and cats were pretty similar. People are overrating the first game, they were both solid, but not exceptional. He's a fine depth guy, just doesn't have the talent to be a top-flight footballer, but goes ok.

In an ideal world he’d be good enough to hang onto and try and develop. It isn’t an ideal world and if we only draft 3 players and promote only Clarke from the rookie list we have to delist 2 players assuming Wakelin and Buckley retire. If we want to keep players like Iles for a couple of years we will have to trade a few out who have some currency or end the careers of players like Licuria. Fortunately we have to make some hard decisions for the first time in a long time.
