Hey guys,

Do you think Sam Newman is a positive or a negative for the club?
I find myself agreeing with Sam a lot of the time when it comes to football, but am interested to find whether Geelong fans support his radical and ofte polarising view of his former club.

He's a bit of a double edged sword for the club.

I don't like the way he's the first to lay the boots in when we aren't going well. It's like he's just waiting and expecting for it to happen and he takes some satisfaction when it does.

I think Sam's non-sycophantic role in the media for the club is good for it....to a point. I do think he goes over the top in his criticism with the club, beyond the point of being constructive. I think he could do a lot of good for the club if he wanted to- but then that doesn't make for good, ratings building television does it? Better sink the boots in while they're down Sam.

He is paid to be controversial and it is a job he does very well.

Whether is is a positive or negative for the club is a moot point. He is just another commentator and we should not expect any favours from him.

I've got no problem with what he says. God knows idiots like Brownless will never say things like that, so someone has to. I'm extremely tired of the outrage some Geelong fans fly into whenever anyone dares criticise the team. The same morons who cheer them off after losses. These guys are now fully professional. They don't have day jobs. They don't do anything else. It's not unreasonable to expect them - especially now we've built a quality team - to win. They want all of us supporters to be members too, well we want results. Not next week, or next year, on the next 5 years. Now.

They're happy enough to accept the plaudits when we win, it's fair that they cop the abuse when they lose. If they don't like it tough. They can always quit and do normal work.

I'm not suggesting that the team should be immune from criticism, far from it in fact. And if your intimating that I might be one that claps them off after a loss you couldn't be more wrong. My problem with Sam is that his criticism when we are going badly is disproportionate to his praise when we are going well. As a 300 game player of the club he could probably be a bit more of an ambassador at times.

Sam is extremely negative and sometimes over the top but often he is the only one speaking his mind publically on what a lot of us supporters are thinking.

Like when he got the boot into Ben Graham about dishing off whenever he'd mark within 50m of the goal. Or cracking the :D:D:D:Ds whenever geelong revert to their short game.

I guess at least he isn't a one-eyed mogal like Ed.

Sams right. He knows how we play, he hates the short chipping crap like most of our supporters and he is right to tell us to kick the bloody thing long.

He should however be more involved in the club, he is ruck coach for the dees? What is stopping him from going down and helping Blake out? Instead of criticising him on MMM./

There are two Sam Newmans:
1. the media buffoon, worth to the club? well he keeps us in the news.

2. the individual, worth to the club? A long term passionate supporter who has contributed significantly, both as a player and materially since. In this regard I believe he has been fantastic.
