Sammy Newman to return

Another ex-Cat is back, and it's starting to get scary. Popular and opionated TV prankster, John 'Sammy' Newman will join Geelong's growing band of ex-players to assist the cats in 2004. Newman will be involved with the coaching committee, and will be responsible for coaching the players on behind-the-play tactics designed to put their opposition players off their game.
"Sammy has demonstrated an incredible knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of our opponents and he will no doubt be able to come up with some creative one-liners that will put the opposition in a spin. He will be a fantastic resource for us throughout the season,” Cats’ coach Mark Thompson said.
"In his time on the Footy Show he has shown that he's a natural. His quick wit, and willingness to drop his pants on short notice will ensure even the most committed and focused opposition players will be put off their game."
"Sammy will work with the players off the field and offer his views in match committee through the week and in the box on game days. It is fantastic to have him back at the club.”
Newman returns to club after a 23 year absence, and said he is happy to come back to the Cats despite some rather negative comments he's made about the team on-air over the past few years.
“I have come back because I do recognise the good things that the club has done in recent years with the youngsters. The problem is that Bomber's bringing them up a little too 'nice', and think that I can help make a difference, particularly with the emerging forwards. McCarthy in particular looks like he has a full package downstairs, and is big enough to give more than he gets” Newman said.
Newman played 300 senior games with the Cats, and kicked 110 goals. He says that despite his best and fairest awards in 1968 and 1975, he was far from 'fair'. "I was a great niggler. In those days we gave plenty behind play and the umps didn't have a clue. I figure my white boots made me look like a bit of an angel."
Newman will join Adrian Fletcher, Steve Hocking, Ken Hinkley, Daryn Cresswell, Damian Bourke and Andrew Bews, who will all return to the Cats next year.
And in other exciting news for Cats fans, Garry Ablett Snr is expected to announce shortly that he too will be renewing his ties with the current Cats. He is expected to be taking on an advisory role in the medical team, assisting with the administration of pain-killing and relaxation medication.

Although Sammy returning wouldn't be a bad idea, at least then he might actually shut up and stop bagging us.
