Hi Footy fans...

The Eagles may have just put themselves in the box seat once again to take the shortcut to the Grand Final, with only the Panthers posing a credible threat to such an eventuality with only percentage keeping them in second spot. But like the Double Blues this past weekend, the Panthers have a bye coming up which could scuttle any shot they have at pulling off such a feat. If the Eagles do have a brain-fade over the next two weeks, the Panthers could possibly nab their first minor premiership since 1991 and entering a qualifying final. Then there's the scenario facing the Bulldogs, the Magpies must defeat their long-time rivals at home to stand any chance of September action. But with a final-round bye coupled with the Dogs' clash with the wooden-spooners at the Ponderosa, the Magpies may end up joining their AFL counterparts in finals oblivion. Two more rounds, people!

Welcome to the Round 20 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

The first match for this week's blog takes us to bay-side, the Gliderol Stadium at Glenelg hosting the contest between the Tigers and the Magpies. The last match between these sides was loaded with goals and stunned the Alberton faithful as the Tigers went on a second-half blitz to take a 19-point win in Round 10. The Tigers had been eyeing off that fifth spot for a few weeks, but after a loss to Centrals last week the dream was over. The Magpies on the other hand were still alive in the hunt for that same position, they downed the Roosters last weekend to keep themselves in contention, a loss here would confirm the final five with no Port involvement. Inaccuracy by the Tigers in the first quarter would keep the quarter-time gap to a single straight kick, the Bays scoring 4.6 to the Magpies' 4.2 for a four-point deficit at the first change. That poor shooting would be punished in the second quarter, the Magpies wresting control of the match despite their own quarter of wayward kicks on goal. They kicked 7.5 to the Tigers' 1.2 to take a 35-point lead into the half-time break. The Magpies engine room sputtered a little bit in early into the second half, but the Tigers couldn't fully capitalise on the sudden lull in Port's attack. They chipped a mere few points off the visitors' lead, scoring 4.3 to 3.5 to reduce the Maggies' lead to 31 points by three quarter-time. There was a brief ray of hope from the Tigers when they took the first two goals of the final term, but along with a couple of behinds they were eventually left in the Magpies wake after they bagged 6.2 to finish off the afternoon with a 55-point victory to keep their faint finals hopes alive. Steve Summerton continues to lead by example, taking best afield votes for Port while the Tigers named Warrick McGinty as their best.

The next match up takes us to the northern suburbs, where the Bulldogs met their old rivals in the Eagles at the My Money House Oval in Elizabeth. The last match between these two sides was one the Dogs fans would rather forget for the year, hammered by almost 15 goals at Woodville in Round 11. Two quarters of football was all it took for the Eagles to bury their former Grand Final demons, including the devastating final quarter run of 10 goals to two. To add insult to injury, their last visit to the Ponderosa in 2015 was of no trouble as the Eagles left with a 40-point win. Both sides had a hard time in front of goal this time around, the Dogs taking a quarter-time lead of 13 points after scoring 3.4 to the Eagles' 1.3. But the Jekyll and Hyde form that the Bulldogs have had this year would strike again, despite the Eagles continuing to spray shots wide on goal they would bring the deficit back to just two points by the long break, scoring 4.6 to the Dogs' 3.1. The Dogs seemed to be running a character test early on in the match, but their lapses in concentration would be costly. The Dogs would launch forward, only to find Eagles instead of team-mates in their 50-metre arc resulting in quick repelling runs. When play resumed, the Eagles eventually took over the lead, kicking 3.2 to the Dogs' two goals to be up by a goal going into the final change. The class of the Eagles would win out in the end, they kept the Dogs to just one behind to run out 25-point winners on the back of a 3.2 last quarter. Nick O'Brien was voted best for the Eagles, the Dogs voting in Elliot Kavanaugh as their best.

Match number three for the weekend finds us heading back towards the city, we turn off to the Prospect Oval where the Roosters faced the Panthers. The last outing between these sides as back in Round 10, the Panthers bouncing back from a disastrous trip to Alberton to take a 31-point victory at Noarlunga. Probably the only saving grace for North's season is that they will likely miss the wooden spoon unless the Bloods can win their last two matches, while the Panthers can still take aim at a minor premiership but still have the double chance in finals all sewn up and confidence is high after their win against the Blues last week. The Panthers were challenged early by a Roosters outfit with not much left to lose, at quarter-time the Roosters held a five-point lead after a 5.1 to 4.2 opening term. The second quarter was rather dull, the Roosters' lead brought down to a single kick by half-time. The Roosters' 1.5 to the Panthers' two goals saw the home side reeled back to just four points at the long break. The pressure that the Roosters in that first half was seriously testing the Panthers mettle, but the test was about to end early. The South Adelaide machine finally stirred to life in the second half, the Panthers bringing the pain in spades beginning with a third term effort of 7.1 to the Roosters' single major to take a 33-point lead at three quarter-time. The winless streak would stretch to seven for the Roosters, the Panthers running away with it in the final term to leave Prospect with a 49-point win after a 5.1 to 2.3 last quarter. Souths would name Matt Rose as their best on ground, the Roosters naming Alex Spina as their standout performer.

The last match for the round takes us across to the nearby eastern suburb of Norwood, where the Redlegs hosted the Crows at Coopers Stadium. The Redlegs' last encounter at The Parade was a forgettable one, downed by 47 points in Round 11. The 'Legs were able to keep step with the Crows up until the third term where they were held to three behinds while the Crows broke away to a five-goal plus lead. Like the Roosters, the Redlegs have no September to look forward to and with at least one key player already signalling his intent to return to Victoria next season, there was not much more for Norwood to lose. The Crows still have two more games ahead, they downed Port two weeks ago while the 'Legs defeated West last round. The game was pretty even early on as the Crows led by just one point at the first change after scoring 3.4 to 3.3 in the opening stanza. They would turn the screws some in the second term though, breaking out to a 19-point lead at the half-time break after kicking 6.2 to the 'Legs 3.2. The Redlegs' third term would be the quarter of football that allowed this one to get away from them, inaccuracy putting them even further behind the Crows who stretched their advantage to 37 points by the final change after scoring 4.1 to 2.5. The AFL-backed class finished the match off with a 5.3 to three goal final quarter to run out seven-goal winners, sending a warning to their opponents ahead of their impending maiden finals appearance, Bulldogs watch out! Jono Beech was voted Adelaide's best afield, the Redlegs voting Kristian Roocke as their best.
