Hi Footy fans...

"Strike me pink!" -- KG Cunningham.

That was just one of the phrases heard throughout the SANFL on a regular basis during the 1980's and there was probably more than a few utterings of this around the grounds this past weekend. The Retro Round brought back memories for many, their clubs decked out in some classic design jumpers, some probably even took up the dare to get their 80's face on... mullets, handlebar mo's and all. Heck, the Tigers even brought back their disco night back! But I can say this with absolute confidence now, the final five sides are well and truly locked away. There's now just one round to go before the finals series kicks off, does anyone below the line have one last upset to deal out before they head back to their respective drawing boards?

Welcome to the Round 18 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

The opening match for the weekend finds us at the Coopers Stadium in Norwood as the Redlegs faced the Roosters under Friday Night Lights. Their last encounter was back in Round 4, the Roosters inflicting a 44-point hiding at Prospect -- the 'Legs last loss for the season. Fast forward to this game and the Redlegs have been red hot, a run of 12-straight wins including last week's table-top clash against the Eagles. The Roosters faltered a little in the meantime, dropping from the top three down to Elimination Final position. They were defeated by the Tigers by three points at Glenelg last weekend. A win tonight would seal the minor premiership and the week off from the first round of finals. Both sides had a hard time in front of goal in the opening term, the Redlegs scoring 2.5 to 1.4 to lead by seven points at quarter-time. While the inaccuracy issues continued into the second quarter, the Roosters were the improvers as they kicked to a two-goal lead by the half-time break with their score of 5.4 to 2.3. The Redlegs were shooting themselves in the foot at times, North's pressure on ball and man taking the home side a bit off-guard and forced numerous turnovers. But as expected from Norwood, it wasn't going to be long before they found their second wind. The Roosters had stretched their lead to 19 points mid-way through the third quarter, but by the final change they were within a single straight kick's reach of the Redlegs. Norwood scored 3.4 to 2.1 to reduce the gap to three points. North didn't have anything left in the final term and the 'Legs moved in for the kill, scoring 4.1 to 1.1 in the final term to take a 15-point win and securing the precious bye from the final's opening week. Matt Panos was named best for Norwood, the Roosters named Cameron Craig as their best on ground.

Now its onto the Saturday afternoon and we're going to the tree-lined streets of Unley for the next game, the Double Blues facing the Bloods at the Peter Motley Oval. The last time these sides met, the Blues had the Bloods' measure but they never truly put them away, taking a 19-point win at Richmond in Round 9. Both clubs came into this one as winners from Round 17, with Sturt managing to outlast the Panthers at Noarlunga by 13 points and the Bloods took down the Magpies by 26 points at home. The opening term was a mess, with the Bloods scoring the only goal of the quarter and both sides notching up four behinds a piece. At quarter-time, West was up by that single major. The Blues were far more switched on in the second term, but kept spraying a good deal of their shots wide. The Bloods could only manage one behind, Sturt scored 3.5 to lead by 16 points at the long break. The football being produced by the reigning premiers was nothing like what they're known to be capable of, going back only a couple of rounds ago against the Bulldogs -- a team in a similar position to West -- they were already nine goals to the good by half-time. Sturt coach Martin Mattner's post-game comments reflected as much. When play resumed, the Blues managed to build a buffer that would be unassailable in the end, kicking 5.3 to 3.1 to lead by five goals come three quarter-time. There were probably some in the crowd thinking the same as the coach by this time, the final gap brought down to 26 points after the Blues accuracy issues surfaced again with their effort of 1.4 to Westies' 2.2. Thomas Harms was named Sturt's best, the Bloods named Tom Keough as their best on ground.

The third game for the round finds us heading up the Port Road to the Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval in Woodville where the Eagles hosted the Panthers. It was back in Round 8 that the Eagles won a tight tussle at Noarlunga, winning by 14 points despite a final term rally by the Panthers and their own problems finding the big sticks. Both clubs played the second week of the split round and while the Eagles put the Crows to the sword at Oval Avenue, the Panthers went down to the Double Blues at home by 13 points. The opening quarter was a shootout with both sides kicking four goals each. South would lead by a point at the first change with their three behinds to the Eagles' two. The Eagles' second term was nothing short of horrid, they were kept scoreless while the Panthers kicked 4.2 to lead by 26 points at the long break. That was their worst quarter of football since being kept to a point in the first term against Port in Round 2, which is funny because that game was an absolute stinker. The Panthers would have to weather the storm from here onwards, the Eagles reeling back the deficit to a couple of kicks by the final change. Their shooting was not crash-hot, otherwise it would have been the home side ahead by a couple of kicks. The Eagles scored 4.5 to 2.2 to trail by 11 points at three quarter-time. Now it was an arm-wrestle, with South on the cusp of sealing their spot in September. There were some long breaks between scores, but in the end it was the Panthers that held firm against the Eagles' attacks. The home side's three goals would not be enough in the end, the Panthers adding 2.1 to put the game out of their reach. The visitors were victorious by a single goal in probably one of their most memorable wins of the year. Matthew Rose was named best for South, while James Boyd was best for the Eagles.

The last Saturday match has us jumping the tram to the bay, where the Tigers took on the Crows at the Gliderol Stadium in Glenelg. Back in Round 7, the Tigers came back from the State match bye to bring down the Crows to the margin of 33 points. It was one of several games this year that the Crows have led at some point only to be overrun. The Tigers still had a mathematical chance of making the finals, but despite their three-point win against North last week and the Panthers losing their game during that round, by afternoon's end those hopes would be put down with South's eventual win at Woodville. Adelaide's dismal season at state league level continued last week against the Eagles, going down by 45 points. So for the Tigers, for the next two weeks its about going out from 2018 with some pride. Adelaide's goal-kickers should have put their side ahead by at least two goals by quarter-time, but scores were locked at 30 points each after the Crows kicked 4.6 to the Tigers' five goals without a miss. The Tigers asserted themselves from here, keeping the Crows to just one goal whilst kicking 4.2 for themselves to lead by 20 points at half-time. For some in the Crows camp, they were trying to earn selection for their one last chance at the seniors, who are also out of finals contention. While the AFL-listed players were racking up the disposals, the Tigers were racking up goals. The margin was put out to six goals by the final change, Glenelg scoring 5.4 to Adelaide's three goals in that third term. The home side put the foot down in the final quarter, bagging six goals to the Crows 2.3 to run off to a 57-point win. Ben Sawford was named best for the Tigers, the Crows named Cam Ellis-Yolmen as their best afield.

In the final match for the round, there was a single Sunday afternoon match over at the Alberton Oval, where the Magpies hosted the Bulldogs. Despite having an average year themselves, there was still a sense of shock when the Magpies took a three-goal win at the Ponderosa in Round 10. This was definitely one that the Dogs let get away, they led by 19 points at quarter-time but the Magpies' second and third terms made the difference. Both sides went down in their respective games in the split round, the Magpies by 26 points to the Bloods and the Redlegs making their dozen at Central's expense. There was some extra motivation for the Magpies, with long serving skipper Steve Summerton announcing his retirement at season's end. Early on though, the Bulldogs looked like they were well and truly going to spoil the party after scoring six goals without a miss to Port's 1.3 to lead by 27 points at quarter-time. But old habits saw that lead cut back to a couple of straight kicks by half-time, the Magpies scoring four goals to the Dogs' lowly 1.2. At the break the Dogs lead was down to 11 points. Port were forcing errors out of the Dogs, but their entries into their attacking 50 were met with staunch resistance and they weren't making the most of opportunities. They actually finished with 10 more visits than Centrals. The Dogs overall enthusiasm was rewarded in the third quarter, scoring 4.1 to the Magpies' two goals to re-establish their grip, taking a four-goal advantage into the last term. The 'Pies threw everything they had left at the Dogs, but the visitors were able to hold firm for a 22-point win after a 3.1 to 3.3 final term. Trent Goodrem was the leader by example and named best for Centrals, the Magpies named Sam Powell-Pepper as their best.

THREE SANFL STALWARTS TO HANG UP THE BOOTS
Jason Porplyzia, Leigh Ryswyk and Steve Summerton have announced their intentions to wrap-up their playing careers at their respective clubs at season's end. Porplyzia will finish with 127 matches over two stints at Westies, along with 130 AFL games with Adelaide. He was one of the heroes that brought the Bloods the 2015 premiership, but injury has been a constant issue and was a factor in his decision to retire. Ryswyk managed to score 223 goals from 225 games and is a member of the league 200-club as a result, as well as featuring in four state matches. He may still have a couple of games left to go though, with North sealing an Elimination Final spot in two weeks time. And finally we have Summerton, considered one of the "last of the true Magpies" after the Power took full control of the Magpies in 2014. He was unlucky to not have at least one premiership to his name, he came into the club in 2006 and is also a member of the SANFL 200-club with 220+ games and has featured for the league in representative football on several occasions including the 2014 win against the VFL in Melbourne.
