Hi Footy fans...
In seven weeks, the finals series commence... and for three teams, South Adelaide holds something very precious to them. They possess fifth spot, holding on to it only on percentage. Its a three way dance for Port, Norwood and Glenelg in the race to the finals and the Panthers are the only ones who can keep them from getting to close, but lately the South boys have been tripping over themselves.
So lets see what happened this past weekend in this weeks SANFL Wrap-Up for Round 17...
First, its off to Prospect Oval, where the Roosters found themselves under another aerial attack, this time from the Eagles. The visitors were under some big pressure to bag a win, especially after two straight losses to Port and Centrals. The first quarter saw the Eagles up by a goal at quarter time, 28 points to North's 22 points. They extended that lead to eight points before the long break, it could have been a bigger lead had the Eagles not been so inaccurate. The Roosters, no matter how much they tried, could not close the gap. The Eagles still outscored the home side for the rest of the game, in the third term they kicked 4.2 to 3.3, then in the final term kicked 4.3 to North's three perfect scores. The Eagles winning by 22 points.
Over at Richmond, the Bloods had their hands full dealing with the Bulldogs. With yet another retiring player in Ben Marsh and a 150 game milestone for Chris Chubb, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the Westies lot were trying to pull off another inspiring upset. It didn't look likely, the Bulldogs getting out to a 41 point lead at quarter time. But the Dogs took their feet off the gas for the following two quarters, they kicked 3.6 to West's 4.4 in the second term and after the half time break, got 3.1 to 3.3 in the third term. But the Bloods couldn't get too close in the end, the visitors saving some of their best for the last quarter. A five goal final term saw the Dogs win by 53 points. Daniel Schell and Chris Gowans bagged four goals each, plus Schell's high grab probably getting him a chance at Mark of the Year.
In the ABC Match of the Round, the cameras headed to the Parade where the Tigers paid a visit to the Redlegs. In a contest that was just full of errors, it was Norwood who took the lead of six points at the end of the first term. The errors were really apparent in the second term, especially in the Glenelg goal. Norwood still had the lead at half time, they kicked 1.6 to the Tigers' 1.8 to be up by four points. More inaccuracy followed after half time, the Redlegs kicking 4.5 to Glenelg's 4.1. It was here that the Tigers bared their teeth and let their roar be heard. Their final quarter blitz kept the Redlegs to 2.1 while 7.5 was added to Glenelg's score, the Norwood faithful stood aghast as the visitors took the 26 point win.
In the final match of the round, the Double Blues made the long trip to Noarlunga Oval to face the Panthers. Sturt were out to further embarrass South, the home side as of late have been rather average and unlucky at times. Their luck wasn't going to get any better this day, the Blues getting out to a 22 point lead at quarter time. South's first goal in the second term was their only goal for the half, while the Blues added another four goals to their own score. Going into the long break, Sturt were up by 40 points. The worst was still to come for the Panthers, a mere 1.4 was scored as compared to Sturt's 6.4, giving them a three quarter time lead of 70 points. South's last quarter was the only one where they outscored the Blues, 4.1 to 3.4. But it made little difference to the outcome of the match, Sturt inflicting a 67 point walloping on the Panthers.
