What ideas would you put forward for rule changes to actually improve the game?

Pay hold in the ball in all circumstances you are tackled in possession

No prior opportunity, no excuses, stop all this standing up in the tackle and put the onus on the player handballing to make sure the player is in the clear and once in possession get rid of it quickly

I'm guessing we would not just have a more free flowing game but get back to more kicking and hopefully a few more speccys for the crowd

And last touch out of bounds is a free kick to the opposition same as on the full

Then you got a game

How about "Stop trying to save the Game"?
It has survived for nearly 150 years so far.
It's only recently that they have decided to start tinkering with the rules which has created more head aches and WTF moments than need be.
Leave the bloody rules alone.
It's football.
It's a contact sport.
Always was and always should be.
If some mothers don't wan't their precious little kid to play the game because he might get hurt, then Footy isn't the game he should be playing in the first place.
Send the little sook to sewing class.

They trailed this in the NAB cup a few years back and it was a disaster. You were getting guys spoiling their opponent near the boundary and then giving a up a shot for goal. Players making great smothers that give up shots for goal. Every time a ball was kicked to a pack you had to determine which of a about 10 hands touched it, with a shot on goal on the line. You had players actually not wanting to touch the footy near the boundary in case the accidentally knocked it over when picking it it up. It's farcical.

Boundary throw ins aren't much better, I usually make a cup of tea while I'm waiting

Yeah but some of the injuries you see these days in sewing class are not for the faint hearted :drunk:

Took the words out of my mouth ! good too know someone else thinks the same

If you lose the mum's you lose the sport

No changes to numbers on the ground = EVER AGAIN

No zones to force player to stay inside certain areas = EVER.

You want to know how to fix the game? MAKE IT SIMPLER TO OFFICIATE.

Every week, I like most, scream blue murder at the umpires, but guess what? It's not their fault. We have the hardest game in the world to officiate, heck we had the hardest game already yet the geniuses at AFL headquarters want to change the rules every 6 months to make it even harder to officiate.

Let the umpires pay holding the ball when they think it's HTB, not when the AFL bosses think it is.

Throw the ball up as soon as an umpire gets to a ball up, don't clear the path behind him, don't wait for the rucks, just throw the bloody thing up.

No need to fundamentally change the rules once again, JUST LET THE UMPIRES ACTUALLY OFFICIATE instead of making it so hard on them.

Incorrect disposal seems to have gone the way of the Dodo.

Along with running too far, i.e. over 15 metres, without bouncing the ball. Dont see umpires do that thing very often any more - roll the fists around - to indicate a free kick to the opposition, even when players appear to run 20 or even 30 metres without bouncing.

1. Holding the ball whenever tackled in possession (as per the OP. I've been suggesting this for a while).
2. Fewer players on the ground (also been suggesting this for a while. 16 conservative, 14 aggressive).
3. Much heavier penalising rushed behinds. Defenders should never be able to rush / run it over the line, regardless of under pressure or not.
4. Free kick against last team to touch out of bounds EXCLUDING SPOILS.

I agree with the below in parts but feel that the text in bold would alienate most mothers (and hence their kids). No parent wants to risk their kid getting hurt.

I'm happy the game isn't played today the way it was when I was growing up in Preston in the 80s. :) No rooms for thugs in the sport, and there's no good reason for people getting seriously hurt.

To answer the OP, I agree with Matty. Make the frikkin' game easier to officiate/understand.

Reduce the congestion. Players are fitter, there are more of them due to the sub rule so reduce their numbers. Open the game up again, make it easier to umpire. I can't see any disadvantage.

Pay Travis Cloke a free kick every time he is infringed against.

I also think if you're within two metres of the boundary, you should be allowed to deliberately tap or run the ball out of bounds, it's basically what happens anyway

I think that used to be a rule back in the early days of VFL.

They've trialed it recently in preseason games. I guess it changes the game so much (particularly strategically) it'd be a tough sell.
