What would we do without him?

This guy is absolutely sensational...kept Richo goal-less until the final minutes of play.

He will be remembered one day in the top echeleon of defenders to ever represent the blue and white.

Have to say hats off to Matty today..Scarlett that is. Thought he was absolutely brilliant today. Good to see our side not relying on Richo so much anymore. Scarlett was v good though.

Only player at the moment who would be in A.A. consideration.
If we are any good - as I've said before - we should have 4 - 5 at that level.

Instead we'd be lucky to have two - Scarlo and Jr. Chappy might be unlucky to miss. Other than that, what do we have but honest (and sometimes dishonest) goers?

If Scarlett is an AA on this form, then I think it's obvious some selectors aren't watching.

In this day and age, a defender's game is not merely calculated by his opponents goal sheet. Were it not for his Geelong-esque kicking (to how some people accredit that as Scarlett's due I'll never know), Richo would have single-handedly put this game beyond our reach.

There were no bags of 5 kicked against him, but there were countless times he was beaten in the contest by Richo away from the goalsquare and out on leads, the latter in which Matty refused to close in and provide some sort of pressure, effectively enabling Richo to at least re-launch another attack, even if the scores didn't trickle off his own boot.

All good and well that Matty got his 17 off touches and half a dozen marks, but how many of those were Ling specials? Worthless chips across the ground. Some have noted his growing arrogance and on-field demeanour, to which I've yet to personally notice, but the underlying fact that Matty is nowhere near great form is true to the bone.

If that's AA standard, then that speaks volumes of this game more than anything.

Who else would be challenging him, though? Brian Harris, that is all I can think of.

In Scarlett's defence, a couple of Richo's behinds were a fair distance from goal.

What about the St.Kilda game? Kept Gehrig to 3 possessions and 1 goal. That didn't count? Although he was stupid for getting suspended he's been once again our best this year.

Ahahah, nice one! Damn, The Late Show was great.
Matty is a legend, but will never live up to the standards of the great Boonie!

dont get too excited
its all about perception.
now richo had a sacrificial role to play at kardinia park
his role was to keep scarlet out of his comfort zone and allow us to cre8 space and kick more than 16 goals, which we did.

now , as i said its about perseption
richo had 6 shots at goal, all gettable , all against scarlet.

he managed only 1.4 and an out on the full cos he had one of those richo days.

so richo vreated space and took scarlet out of his area , could have had 6 goals to his name.

so i say , dont look at the amount of goals kicked, look at th ebigger picture.

richo won the battle in that he fulfilled his team role and took scarlet away from his danger zones.

if richo kicked str8, what would u all be saying. u cant sat scarlet won the battle just because richo did not kick straight for goal!!!

perception fellas get it right

just like those "9" points u kicked in the q. you only kicke "7" points, 2 were rushed behinds by us. u guys had 7 shots at goal with th ewind, we had 7
you kicked 7 points , we kicked 5.2

sorry to give you guys some home thruths

no , im not bagging your team , or gloating.

i live in geelong and have copped my fair sh.it from the cattery

but , the game was won and lost in the coaches box.

you can blame kingsly, otto , th eplayers etc. but its not their fault, coast and sooky thompson keep saying its up to the players. well your team was playing fantastic footy early on, kingsly was on fire, gr8 nab campaign and started well this season. then your coach sacks the condition guru at ur club and things juist went downhill from there.

now bomber hos lost th egroup . the reason you guys lost was simply because geelong has lost faith in their coach and themselves, pure and simple.

the cats have talent, you cant drop form so quick unless something seriously wrong is going on, and from an outsider, its thommo.

after the loss he did not even address the players, he told the press conference he wont speak to the boys til monday . what a weak and gutless pr.ick

then he has the gall to say the tigers were lucky and had lucky breaks.
more excuses.

one cannot deny the better team on the day won , and credit must be given, but thommo is a sook, remember he was the 1st vic player to say he didnt wanna play for vic and wear th ebig v cos he didnt wanna risk getting injured 4 the bombers, he was captain at the time! that tore teddy whitten apart!

geelong has the talent, they have the players, they just dont have the right person coaching them!

it maybe be to close , but its time buddha took over as coach! he will have the respect from everyone around him!

bomer is overrated and th ecause to all ur bad form. dont look at the symptoms, dont point the finger at players, get rid of the cause of teh cancer and that is thompson!

Like, but, but and, but, but, and, and like, but, but , but annnnnnnnnnnnnnd shutup!

maybe scarletts defence forced richo to positions where he was more dubious. fair enough richo missed a couple of gimmes but his other shots for goal werent easy. look at the bigger picture instead of unnecessary ranting.

scarlets defence forced him no where, richo lead scarlet all over the ground and kept our f50 clear! no wonder you cats cant read the play or coach! u cant see anything through ur bue and white sunnies

and richo can have all the kicks he likes outside of the forward 50m. as much as scarlett was taken out of the play so was richo.

and if you had lost you would be bemoaning the fact richo didnt kick straight and that he was too worried about taking scarlett out of the play. had scarlett kicked that goal you would be lambasting richo again.

and i didnt know it was up to scarlett to lead richo to the ball. i must be mistaken with this whole defence idea.

im not saying either won so your sunglasses reference is pure shyte!!!

In Scarlett's defence, a couple of Richo's behinds were a fair distance from goal.

That had more to do with Richo leading Matty a merry dance within the fifty arc than anything else - Richo isn't your typical sit-in-goalsquare key forward, the guy presented all day long and provided a meaningful target for his team. His shots on goal were more than gettable, not only for Richo but for any other forward. Marks from outside fifty may not have resulted in a direct goal marked against Scarlett's name, but it sure as hell meant Richmond were the beneficiaries of a second attack and subsequent goal opportunites.

The requirement from Scarlett was therefore not simply in one-out contests, but in his entire defensive pressure, and that was lacking. Maybe not a direct fist in, but at least some resemblance of pressure. It's all good and well to patrol the defensive fifty arc and rack up the touches while your man is presenting his arse off beyond the fifty, but that does not equate to a good defensive effort on the day, and nor is this custom of his nearly as punishing as it could and should be, going the other way (with his increasingly Ling-esque chip kicking).

I thought Richo had the better of the duel, Scarlett lets his opponents get too many easy kicks imo.

Richo's kicks were more up the ground rather than right inside 50m.

Hence, Scarlett wins out IMO...

Exactly, A full-Forwards job is to mark the ball inside 50 and kick goals. Richo kicked 1.4. Sure he had his chance but Scarlo forced him wide and long and made him earn his kicks which made his shots at goal difficult.

If the great Gary Ablett, Jason Dunstall or Tony Locket only kicked one goal, people would be scratching their head thinking it was coming to an end...

Richo job is to kick goals, Richo kicked one goal, Scarlo's job is to stop goals being kicked on hims, he allowed 1 goal. Scarlo wins!
