These things are ruining the game.
The interminable time to complete the last quarter review just stopped the game ... & our run. It allowed the Lions to gather themselves.
New score reviews rules - put a time limit on the time to make a decision.
goal ump calls for a review & states what they think the score was
Field ump calls for the review
reviewed for a max time - 20 secs
no clear decision then umpires call
&
if a review is no score advance the defending teams kicker 25m upfield to overcome the fact the attacking team has had time to set up.

One feature of our performances this year has been our ability to run out games and finish better than our opponents. I’m putting it down to the new fitness staff at the club.

That may also be a factor in why we make a late charge in games we are losing.

That painfully long score review in the last quarter had a similar effect to giving 18 Brisbane players one minute recovery time each on the bench. Of course our players got the same benefit but we were on the charge at that stage. So it favoured them more than us.

Even more galling was the fact that we had the kick out whether it was a mark or a behind. We had to kick two quick goals so conceding a point when we were 9 points down didn’t matter to us.

And apart from anything else it sucked a lot of the excitement out of the finish for any neutrals watching.

The review when Dale had already kicked out was another shocker. The AFL changed the rules a number of years back so that players didn’t have to wait until the goal umpires had waved their flags before kicking in after a behind. This was to speed the game up and make it more watchable. So calling back the Dale kick ran counter to that and of course it penalised us when we were looking to execute a quick transition.

Classic AFL mismanagement of the sport.

I've said this before, but would like to see goals (and behinds) paid even if the ball brushes the post.

That would remove 1-2 score reviews in most games (but not the game last night).

When it is a mark/non mark completed on/over the line by a defending team, should they maybe just run the review in the background, and if it's a point/non-point, adjust the score without calling the ball back? Most of the time, the ump's call is right (or there's insufficient evidence) anyway.

Not sure you could do the same with a forward's mark on/over the line, right call needs to be made with a non-mark/mark as it dictates next possession and completely changes the next phase of the game.
