Well between these two "master" coaches (hint only one is) we have:

Exhibit scat who inherited a team so whacked on whatever and that coached themselves scored the 2011 flag and since the has done SFA. Remember you lost to Richmond in a final LOL.

Exhibit Clarko, built a team out of nothing, won a flag in 2008 breaking scat hearts, then rebuilt a team and achieved a three peat, sorry scats but three in in row always beats skipped year flags (07 09 11) especially since it was done with one coach.

Not only that that he had an assistant called Dimma that ended up coaching Richmond of all teams to a flag after 37 years.

As much as I hate Hawthorn you're still in bloody good hands and apart from a few behind the play whacks I respect Clarko a shit load more.

Clarko didn't build a team.out of nothing.

Like the current Melbourne team their team was built through being shit.

Hodge, Lewis, Roughy and Buddy were all Top 10 draft picks that matured just as the talent pool was watered down by the expansion clubs not giving rivals a chance to catch up.

It's laughable to say that expansion clubs stopped other clubs from catching up when you look at the state of the Gold Coast Suns. At best you could argue they took some draft picks from other Bottom 4 clubs who wouldn't have been challenging during Hawthorn's reign anyway.

Sure.

Lewis and Hodge were both drafted with pics that came from shrewd trading.

You really know nothing of the subject you're talking about.

Imagine how good Geelong would be with priority picks and a **** ton of high draft picks.

We would be unstoppable.
Stop trading them for 34 year olds?

Yes but its prompted a reasoned defence so points for trolling. If more Hawks voted Scott for the lulz it'd be clear there was no comparison.

Clarkson is a POS but a very effective coach (I'd say great) in many areas. He kept stars in top notch productive form like Matthews used to e.g. Hodge and Franklin, but also engineered really good performers out of actual tripe, eg Schoenmakers and Puopolo: like Malthouse used to he turns heaps of C's and D's into B grade players.

He's teams are known their extraordinary skill level, with very few clangermakers: in this aspect his coaching style has been a blessing to the game with clubs once again looking to pick footballers over athletes (to a degree). Hate to say it but in this aspect he's made footy better overall.

He's tactically clever (if immoral) eg "own goals" to keep possession in 2007, squealing to the umps for actual match-winning free differentials, "unsociable football" (aka sniping) etc etc. sneakiest coach since Sheedy and frankly more successful at scamming the system. So a blight on the game to a degree but successful for his club, which after all is his job description.

I glanced at Mitchell's "auto"biography and he mentioned he hated Clarkson so much in 2011 that he asked to be traded to Collingwood, and several players asked Clarkson to stop acting like such a bitch, at which point Clarkson was all "wait, what? I didn't realise the constant savage personal baiting was a problem". So his success comes despite a near fatal shit personality, and he was able to compensate for it which speaks volumes. Compare that with a relatively nice (even loved) blokes like Bucks who couldn't get the players to listen for five years, or Beveridge who couldn't prevent civil war among the players after a single flag.

To his credit Clarkson has enjoyed greater longevity than most, its no exaggeration to say he's the best coach for decades, better probably than Yabby Jeans and maybe even Pagan.

I know priority picks were given to shit teams

Clarko walked into a team that already had Hodge and Mitchell as emerging on field leaders. He didn't pick them, and he'll never have that luxury again, so I'm not anticipating any sustained success from hawthorn while he's there.

OP can crap on about statistics and whatever. But Geelong's best was better than other team.

And Roughead?

Ironic that the two players we did get from shit year were both largely quiet in all of the winning grand finals.

Lewis, Hodge and Mitchell, however, were all picked up by top notch drafting.

Chris Scott has maintained his list for years. Something Clarko has never even done. It will actually be interesting to see if he's capable of it.

Keep in mind Clarko inherited his list (Hodge/Mitchell/Lewis) from the previous coach. He has taken another coaches list from the bottom to the top but has never built his own list. He topped up with mercenaries like Hale, Lake, Gibson, Gunston, Burgoyne, Guerra, McEvoy.

Lewis was drafted end of 2004, when Clarko had already been at the helm.

So many erroneous criticisms made of him ITT. :$

Except he inherited a team a bit like Bevo; the hard yards had been made. Hodge, Mitchel, Lewis all in place prior to Clarko coming on board.
