We also don't get a rookie elevation if he does call it quits too I'm pretty sure.

Real shame, as he's been a great player for us and we are only one game into the new season.

I had a feeling the other day this would happen, hope it doesn't.

St.Kilda are stupid if he retires effective immediately, should have been in R1 over spuds like Webster, Gilbert, Lonie and Wright...

Yes Lonie and Wright are not backman, but an extra defender in the side would of been better...

Surely we would. Just the same as a LTI I would imagine

Barrett doesn't make it sound like its just him being disappointed about being dropped but something else?

Some of the ITKs were saying we convinced him to go around because he wanted to retire. So if it's true it's probably not a good look begging a club legend to go on (when hes just finished his degree as well) only to dump him in the ressies.

Anyway, hopefully Damian is just completely wrong as usual.

Made me feel sick that Brown got a game ahead of him last Saturday, besides the fact that he's a legend of the club Brown in my opinion showed nothing over the pre season - obviously the coaches know the game a hell of a lot more than me but, Dempster has consistently been one of our best players for so long now and the fact he didn't even get selected for the VFL last week, not to mention that the club told him they didn't want to send him all the way up to Albury didn't they? Sounds like some very poor stuff from the Saints.

Found the whole no longer in best 22 unusual. It never seemed realistic he'd obligingly play out the season in the VFL, especially since he'd supposedly wanted to retire and had himself all set up for life after football.

Good start

News to me. We planned to have sean go one more season incase of injury etc. We set him up with our physios and performance management coaches to learn for the next stage of his career as well this year.

if it is selection related, i will add that this falls inline with what i was told late last year that there is no selection integrity by our coaching panel. There are some players i have spoken to both no longer at the saints and still on our list who felt like they could not get a game on form and that coaches selected favourites.

To be honest I didn't think Dempster looked right physically in the lead up games we saw him in. Was it one or two? He looked sore....or cooked! Maybe he just knows he's done. You get to a point you just know it's over, and maybe it has arrived. Sad, but that's the game.

Doubt very much it's because he got dropped. Probably played on as a back up. Don't know that, but suspect it's the case.

Great servant of the club though. Top echelon of club men.

Do the coaching panel know how the players feel about the selection process

It's pretty obvious there is no integrity. Some players (acres have to work there but off to get a game) others get games easily . If we use the game last year against port as a yardstick realistically Acres was dropped after 22 possessions for inconstastancy. Consequently as our expectations have gone up half the team according to this precedent should be dropped

If this is true it is incredibly disappointing. Richo comes across as a guy with great integrity and honesty. Surely choosing the best team must supersede playing favourites?
Could this not be a case of sour grapes by the players who didn't get selected?

Edit: in the case of Acres, as Ads mentions, it does appear a little odd though.

I recently heard the same thing. 3rd hand mind you

I commented on this issue not even a week ago, and as far as I knew Sean knew coming into the season he wasn't guaranteed a game. As Stavro also has mentioned, the club and Sean had an Agreement in place in regards to him also perusing his other interests within the club with their help and blessing.
What's happened in the last week I don't know, but I found it strange that he didn't play VFL last weekend.
