Shoulder blow for Magpie

Young forward Sean Rusling is the first casualty of the new year for Collingwood, suffering a dislocated shoulder in the club's intra-club match at Telstra Stadium in Sydney.

The Magpies are in Sydney for their 2006 Community Camp, and Wednesday's match was the first serious match practice for the players this year.

Rusling was injured when rookie Harry O'Brien appeared to roll on top of him as the pair contested for the ball during the third quarter.

It is the second time in the youngster's short career that he's sustained damage in the shoulder region after his debut season in 2005 was cut short by a broken collarbone against St Kilda in round 17.

Magpies coach Mick Malthouse was disappointed for his speedster - who was working on a combination with Chris Tarrant - but remains hopeful Rusling will return and make an impact this year.

"It's a shame because the kid comes off a broken collarbone and now it looks like he has done some damage to the same shoulder, though it is not the same injury," Malthouse said after the intra-club match.

"We have given him the number two jumper in the anticipation that he is going to be a feature in our first team on a regular basis."

The 19-year-old showed plenty of promise in his six appearances as a leading forward for the Magpies after being recruited from West Adelaide with Collingwood's second round pick - No.23 overall - at the 2004 NAB AFL Draft.

Rusling will return to Melbourne tonight for tests on Thursday, but the club's medical staff are hopeful he will be available for round one of the home-and-away season.

Injured Magpie Sean Rusling has undergone surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder, suffered in Wednesday's intra-club practice game at Telstra Stadium.

The 19 year-old Collingwood forward suffered the injury while contesting a mark against Magpie rookie Harry O'Brien.

The current injury is unrelated to the forward's 2005 season-ending broken collar bone, suffered against St Kilda in round 17.

Rusling flew back to Melbourne on Wednesday evening with Club medical staff. The rising Collingwood star underwent successful arthroscopic surgery, according to Collingwood's head of conditioning David Buttifant. "Sean's surgery went very well and he is now resting at home, however, it is too early to determine how long he will be sidelined.

"We are confident he will make a full recovery, and we will have a better idea of time frame for his return in the next few days."

Rusling: steady recovery

Collingwood forward Sean Rusling is making a steady recovery from shoulder surgery, that will see him miss the start of the 2006 season.

The young Magpie suffered a dislocated shoulder in an intra-club practice game at Sydney’s Telstra Stadium a fortnight ago, returning to Melbourne the following day to undergo reconstructive surgery.

And the club and the patient could not be happier with how the surgery went, according to Rusling, who returned this week to Adelaide to spend a week with his family, before he returns to Melbourne to see the surgeon and club medical staff at the end of this week.

“The surgery went really well. There was a small tear in the cartilage which they were pretty confident that they fixed. They are confident that it should heal well and that I will make a full recovery.

“But you can’t really predict too much about how the recovery will go - and how quickly it will heal.”

O'Brien upgraded for Rusling

Exciting Collingwood youngster Sean Rusling has been placed on the club's long-term injury list. Rookie Harry O'Brien has been upgraded as his replacement.

Rusling, who played six AFL matches in his debut season last year, is one of Collingwood's best emerging talents.

But his 2006 season suffered a set-back when he injured his shoulder in an intra-club match at Telstra Stadium in February. He then underwent shoulder surgery.

Rusling's stature at the club is that high that he is part of Collingwood's membership drive for 2005.

He features in this line: "I'll be there when Buckley, Tarrant, Rocca, Fraser, Didak, Travis Cloke and Rusling line up in the forward 50 in round one".

Rusling will be on the long-term injury list for at least eight weeks.

O'Brien, who has been retained on the club's rookie list for a second year, played four matches in 2005.

He made his AFL debut in round 18 last year against Fremantle at the MCG.
