One of the rumours going around at the minute is that Sean Wellman is about to retire.

If that is the case, would the Crows be interested in having Sean as an assistiant coach?

depends if his interested, depends if he wants to return home because he has lived in victoria for a long time now, but in saying that he has always struck me as being a great student of the game and would make an excellent assistant perhaps as our backline coach!

Why would a 29 year old qualified podiatrist with a successful practice want to sit in a coaching box ? Been a great player - and maybe later in life yes - but I would doubt he would return to Adelaide to coach

I think that about sums it up. I actually used Sean as a podiatrist when I was living in Melbourne and he was excellent!!

I will always remember Sean as a part of possibly the best win win win deal ever constructed by three clubs: Wellman to Essendon, Salmon to Hawthorn and Jarman to Adelaide. No one got burnt and everybody picked up a high quality player that was happy to be at that club for a long time. I still think we got the best of the deal as it probably won us 2 flags, but overall a great trade for all clubs. Sean said he was bitter for about 2 weeks and then he was over it and hasn't looked back since.

Not to mention all the minor picks and players involved - Essendon also acquired Paul Barnard from the Hawks as part of it all.

Nice bloke and promising young defender who we probably didn't expect would turn into such a great player.

5 goals in 2 games (both big losses) in a rubbish side wasn't that bad.

2.5 goals a game is a great average. 2 games in a season however ...

It's a shame we only got 2 games out of him the second time around.

Well if does in fact retire, good luck to him, he has done so well since leaving Adelaide.
Im stoked with the trade as Im sure every club involved would of been.
Who would of thought that Wellman would go on and Captain Essendon in a few games when Hirdy was injured!

"He said he was approaching 2005 as if it was his final year and added that he was 'at peace' with his decision to retire from the game. He started in 1994 with Adelaide and made the 'big move' across the border for the 1996 season. He plans to continue devoting time to his podiatry practice in South Melbourne."

Wellman along with Ben Hart, Peter Turner and Adam Saliba was a product of Mick Nunan's youth policy at North Adelaide. I saw all these players from the start of their SANFL careers and remember thinking that Turner and Saliba would make the VFL/AFL and dominate for years to come while Hart and Wellman would struggle to keep their spots in the SANFL............mmmmmmmmmmm
