I always step into the book shop whenever I go to the shopping centre. I can spend a bit of time looking.
What annoys me these days is the fantasy over load, of books with all sorts of creatures and princes and dark lords and , well, the only fantasy that seems really clever is the Game of thrones stuff.
But in the end for me , I see something that looks exiting pick it up, and blow me down its book two of the blah blah blah foreign new world series. When does this end.

There are some good books around, and my favourite stuff is Historical fiction, good historical fiction that blends some reality into fictional characters, who would/could have existed, if you know what I mean, they are real in a sense.

Ken Follett does this brilliantly, but an old Master was James A Michener.

He has written many great books. Centennial, Texas, Hawaii, The Source, Chesapeake , Poland many more.Including Tales of the South Pacific.
These books are filled with history and stories with characters to match and that fit into his work.

Follett has done Pillars of the Earth, read the book don't watch the TV series.
Then World Without End.
Then He did his tri-series of the 20th century. The Fall of Giants .

(I'd like to see that in Western Sydney ha ha ) Seriously, great read.

An older style book called, The Reckoning, about Llewellyn of Wales, and Edward 1st of England , and Daffydd the younger Brother of the Welsh king, this is full of history and told from the point of view of a person close to the Welsh royalty. A fictional character, but brilliant!

So I guess we will have to put up with fantasy, and the endless book stream from AFL footballers , for a while yet.

But are there any recommendations for really good Historical Fiction coming out now days?

I've done all the Wolf Hall stuff? And the story of Margaret of Anjou, War of the Roses, etc.

Highly recommend the Flashman series by George McDonald Fraser. Some of the funniest stuff I've ever read.

Wow, I was just about to recommend that series. Those books are amazing. I think there is 12 in total. I read he was going to do an Australian one but died before he could. You're right, it's absolutely hilarious.

An Australian setting could've been so easy for him. If he took the factual character of Lola Montez from Royal Flash, who toured the Victorian goldfields in the 1850's, we could've seen Flashy meet with her for another round after he 'led' the miners in the Eureka Stockade.

CJ Sansom's Shardlake novels. Similar to Wolf Hall (same era but continues on after Cromwell's execution). Murder mysteries/associated crimes, with an emphasis on wider Tudor society/social issues. Main character is fictional creation but interacts with historical figures too.

Geraldine brooks The secret Chord was pretty good.

Masters of Rome series by McCullough is brilliant and is my favourite historical fiction. Tracks the rise of Marius in book 1 through to the beginning of the end with Antony & Cleopatra in book 7.

This site has some pretty comprehensive listings of historical fiction and is fairly up-to-date:

And if you're looking for authors who are liked by other people who like the authors you like (if you follow that), then here's where to find them:
