After 14 games last year our percentage was 122.1, this year it's 110 despite 2 extra wins

Last year we had scored 238 points more than our opponents, this year it's only 115
Percentage is usually a very good indicator as to where a team is at, we are 7th on the percentage ladder and a long way behind(around 20%) the Pies, Cats and Crows, and not that far in front of the Blues and Dockers(5%).

I think we will know within a couple of games after the bye if we are a serious contender this season.

Assuming we lose this week we will only be 1 game ahead of last year.

Fages will need to work his post bye magic again but I'm not sure the hunger is there

Interesting statistics. Looking a bit more into them, we have only scored 92 points less than same time last year and conceded 38 points more than same time last year.

We're 11-7 at home in the last 2 season having been 48-4 at home in the previous 4 seasons
At least we won a premiership in the last 2 seasons so that's a positive

Joe had probably kicked 20 goals more than Sam Day to this point in the year.

Playing much better away in the last 2 seasons though.

In the 48-4 era we struggled to play the G. In the 11-7 era we have been more dominant away from home and have mastered the G, including a flag.

Maybe a shift in our style has meant we aren’t as potent at home. Also 48-4 is pretty crazy. Can’t keep that up forever lol.

I also think weve had a tougher home draw recently playing more blockbuster games at home against tough opposition

This years home form is definitely a concern though

Our biggest win at home this year has been by only 19 points. Against West Coast

Accuracy was one factor that has cost us the last two matches. Here are the stats for each team's accuracy, including shots that miss completely!

We are 6th worst (13th) for accuracy: 176 goals, 136 behinds, 75 missed shots, for an accuracy of 45.5%. Notably the 75 missed shots is the most of all teams, with Adelaide second worst with 68 (who are 3rd for overall accuracy).

For set shots, we are 8th worst (11th) for accuracy, 102 g, 72 b, 30 misses, for exactly 50% accuracy. Only Hawthorn has more missed set shots with 35.

Geelong 1st for accuracy in general (212g, 117 b, 64 m, 53.9%) and for set shots (128g, 62b, 24m, 59.8%).

For total shots at goal, we are 3rd on 387, behind Geelong (393) and Adelaide (391). Total set shots we are also 3rd behind Geelong (214) and Hawthorn (227).

But we did come from 24 points down to win against them.
Forget that they are last on the ladder.
Also, one of a few last quarters we were good in.
There are always rainbows somewhere.

It's not just poor goalkicking killing us, it's also failing to retain the ball on kicks inside 50, defending worse against turnovers and letting the other team take it the length of the field to score.

Those three are all related. Bad i50 kick retention due to turnovers in dangerous areas leads to easy transition opportunitities. Giants kicked 11.2 from the back half last week, gross.

I don't think it has been an effort thing up until last week either - effort to pressure has been there in the games I've seen in person previously.

Poor structure, trying some very low percentage kicks 35-50m out, and perhaps opposition teams dropping players into the leading lanes we dominated in finding last year. Frankly I'd kinda prefer we go agricultural for a bit, deep and wide entries if we need to.

The F50 players need to get better at winning groundballs too.

We're 11-7 at home in the last 2 season having been 48-4 at home in the previous 4 seasons
I’m happy to attribute this to shortened pre-season, from having played in the GF the previous year, plus the debacle that is “opening round”.
We dropped 3 out of first 4 home games last year.
We dropped 3 home games this year, where we’ve clearly been playing below expectation - aside from a few big games.

I hope they get rid of opening round next season. It doesn’t benefit us at all and it is a very flat way you open the season. On what planet is kicking off the season with half the teams having a bye a good idea?!? Like having a soft opening to make sure everything is working correctly.
A good suggestion can from some of the talking heads - get rid of this bullshit byes over 4 rounds, and have a “Northern Exposure” round. Mid-season have the teams have a bye, play 4 games north of the Murray. The following week all northern teams have a bye, and the rest of the games get played.
Better yet would be to make sure that following the bye, teams who played do not play a team coming off the bye… but this is probably too much like fairness for the AFL to manage.

It does seem odd how ordinary we are at home at the moment though. Last year we lost four games at the gabba and four games away in the regular season, which was enough of a shock given our previous record

This year 3 losses at the gabba, 1 loss and 1 draw away. And plenty of hard away games!

Of those who have been to the gabba, does the atmosphere seem to be less intense? Maybe more casual fans or supporters happy we won a flag? sounds like that on the telly. they don't seem to really fire up or try to get the team going when they are struggling

Yep get rid of opening round, just start with a full round of fixtures. If they want to promote the northern states just have all all 4 teams play at home during round 1.

While they're at it get rid of having the bye rounds spread over 5 weeks, it disrupts the flow of the season, do it over 2 rounds, get it bloody over and done with.

Also transfer the pre finals bye to a pre GF bye which would restore a better advantage to the top 4 teams for their H&A efforts. Have the Brownlow, AA announcements, all the footy awards showcased between the Prelims and the GF.

Unfortunately I think the pre-finals bye will remain. There’s so much agitation for a wildcard/play-in round for 7-10, and the only way they can achieve that is with a bye for 1-6. I think it’s a bloody stupid idea, what chance does a team in 7-10 have of winning the GF?!? They would need to win 5 knockout matches, without a break. Pointless, other than a typical AFL money grab.

The pre-finals bye will stay. It was brought in when one year Ross Lyon rested more than half his side for final round of home and away match that was a dead rubber. AFL doesn't want these situations.
