Textbooks are easy enough to get rid of, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a place/way to quickly and efficiently get rid of novels, paperbacks etc.

I have tried eBay, Gumtree and garage sales with limited success. Does anyone know of any second hand book shops in and around Melbourne that are willing to take on second hand books for a few dollars in return?

As an aside I am also looking for a store that might buy second hand DVDs.

Does anyone have experience dealing with Dixons?

It really depends on what you've got, I reckon. I'm in Adelaide so I can't comment on Melbourne book stores, but I've taken a heap of books into book exchanges with mixed results. They're generally not interested in common titles or low quality fiction (the 3-for-$20 bin type stuff). I tried to sell a box of 20 or so Steven King books a while back and the guy in the shop wasn't interested at all. Since then I gave up on book exchanges and just sell on ebay now.

With ebay, I've found that the easiest way to sell is to tap into a niche market. For example, I had this book about alien sightings in Australia that was very popular, got heaps of bids. Music autobiographies seem to do very well too.

You may find that no one wants your books so you may as well drop them off at the Salvos or something.

What kind of books are you trying to sell?
