Utter bullshit Hawk. There are plenty of bands who've "made it" without changing their music for the sole purpose of selling more rekkids.

All power to the struggling muso hitting pay dirt. Just pisses me off when they sell their soul to achieve this.

^ spot on ClubMedhurst.

There is also a massive difference between selling out and evolving as a musician. Would everyone love the Beatles so much if they stuck doing that yeah yeah yeah shit for 10 years?

this is always gonna be a matter of opinion from band to band. i dont really see how anyone could say that Silverchair "sold out" they went from being a bunch of 14 year olds jamming nirvana covers in their garage (Frogstomp) to being legitimate songwriters and recording material with some real technical nouse, colour and composition (Neon Ballroom, Diorama)

Scenario.

I am a struggling muso eeking out a living by playing very trendy music loved by the music police who rated you because the general public hadn't heard of you.

By chance you crack it for a hit song and the that hit song starts to bring some publicity and most of all cash.

Record deals are offered and lots of cash waved in your face.

Your alternatives are

1) To say **** off. My 20 fans wont forgive me for "selling out"! Rather be on the dole and pump petrol part time.

or

2) Thanks I'll have some of that and I will now try and write another song that will do more of the same and I might be able to have a very comfortable living.
Even might enjoy the fruits of my 20 years of busting my arse learning the craft.

Really people. I think we all might be Sell Outs if the opportunity arose.

Indie snob w***erism at is best.

I see what you're getting at, hawk. But where your rationale breaks down is in the line "I will now try and write another song that will do more of the same". It implies the creativity which spawned the first hit has been replaced by a need to conform ... I believe this is what the "indie snob w***ers" object to.

They're not selling out because they are popular - they're selling out because of their need to be popular.

What is it with you offended sooks? Someone has an opinion and you all get fired up over nothing.

Either learn to deal with it or stop listening to Muse.

Stupd indy kids!! !! !!!!!

Would the Beatles be considered any good if you heard them for the first time in this day and age? I don't necessarily think so.

Kings of Leons last two albums have had half good/half bad.
Muse's latest is a big load of wank.

I don't consider there to be such a thing as indie now, as to me, indie has become the mainstream.

It was more that, when the Beatles first came out, there wasn't as much variety of music as there is today, and nowadays it is much harder not to rip off certain riffs etc.
Which is why they are regarded so highly, they broke away from their boy band image and recorded Revolver, which IMO is the greatest album ever
