Our last 3 games have been ordinary, even though we won against the Hawks, so who have been the biggest passengers?

1. Matera
2. Judd
3. Kerr
4. Sampi

Question for Woosha - Do you think your small forward line structure is still working?

Adkins hasn't done anything since the Brisbane game. He should be dropped this week. Sampi is struggling, but he is only young so he will have ups and downs. Matera's form is a worry. I'm not sure what happened with Kerr and Judd and I suspect our coaching staff is the same.

Matera should never be used as the leading forward. He's a crumber and an opportunist. We need a bigger (than haynes) FF so that if the ball spills, Phils there to crumb. No rocket science there.

Unless the midfield learns how to actully kick the ball to our fowards, not over their heads, I don't see how going with a tall forward line or a dominant full forward i.e Troy Wilson, is going to help us.
And in my opinion it's too late in the season to change the structure. But I can see your point.

The only reason they are kicking the ball over the forwards heads is because they are kicking to short people.
Agreed it is too late to change the structure now, and the only options we have are Wilson, Hansen & Lynch (all in ordinary form at the moment)
It saddens me to say it, but I'm pretty confident our season will be over after the first week of the finals.

I'm not talking about them kicking it over their heads now, I'm talking about when we had Wilson up forward. On occasion the delivery was good, but most of the time it ended up going over his head.

Also I'd love to know how many times one of our players kicked it directly to a St Kilda player in our F50 yesterday.

12 - A rough count until I can study the replay again.

Fido is not just a briliant crumber. The majority of his goals have been from marks where Haynes has lead and created space for Fido to run into and mark. I think Fido's injury has reduced his pace though. A tall like BB will not help Fido because BB can't wrestle. When Scotty was FF he could wrestle with Fido on the crumb. Our best option is to keep it as it is or play Sampi in the pocket instead of Fido if Fido is not quick enough. The structure works with Haynes. Pumping high balls in with a tall has been tried with Cox, Jako. Gardy and a few others. It doesn't work. We have to kick the ball into space for players on the lead. Not high where the defence will punch and rebound.

Kicking to tall forwards does work as long as they can either a) mark and goal or b) create crumbs from a contest for the Fidos, Samps of the forward line.

The problem is that Wilson can only do a) and is not a reliable kick for goal anyway. Cox & Jako are unreliable marks in the forward line and definitely can't do b) properly and Gardy can't be spared from the ruck.

We need to develop tall forwards who can mark and/or contest as required. That's why McDougall or Gaspar or whoever must be persisted with at CHF.

Completely agree here - unless the kick is absoultely spot on, (ie out in front so Phil can run ont it and mark on his chest), it doesnt work. He doesnt have strong hands and even in games we win there have been at least 10-15 times I can remember him being outmarked within goal range.

People around me in the crowd are always asking why we kick it high to the smallest man on the ground!!!

I think for this week we need to bring in another tall marking option up forward, another defender (tall) and replace 1-2 midfielders. Id like to see

IN:
Lynch - to play CHB with an option to go to FFWD.
Chambers - to give us some more run through the middle
Selwood - has been in great form - could play HBF or on a wing
Hansen / Seaby - the tall marking option on the FFWD line. Id dtill have Haynes leading out from FF with Hansen or Seaby staying within 25m of goal to take a contested mark or create some crumbs.......

OUT: Adkins, Wirra (inj), Read (needs some time to recover from the knee still), Carroll - tries hard but not quite there...

Do you really want commint yourself to such torture?

Our whole structure was non-operational yesterday, it was horrible to watch. :(

Not the most enjoyable couple of hours television - I'll wait until I'm in a foul mood anyway so I don't end up spoiling the rest of the day ;)

I personally would like to see Doogs moved to Full Forward.
We know he is quick.
We know he can kick goals.
We know he can mark.

Leave Jako at CHF and rotate him with Staker.

I would also like to see Jones given more time forward. He has a good pair of hands.

Maybe we could even see the return of Sirakowski who played a good game on the weekend.

:D

Yep I like this. Put doogs at FF and rotate Jako and Staker at CHB. Someone email Woosha with this plan, It might just work. :D:D:D

BTW: not being sarcastic, really like the idea.

And pump high balls into the 50 against the Adelaide defence...I don't think so.

How did we get to being the highest scoring side in the competition? With a tall forward line...no. With a fast leading smaller forward line, balls played into space and midfielders running through the half forward line..yes. That's how we've got where we are this season and with key players returning in the next couple of weeks that's how we should continue to play.

too many times on sunday, the ball was quicked to phil matera but it was too deep so he had to wait for it and by that time the sainters tall defender was there and he just took the mark too easily. if you're gonna match up an agile small fella with a tall almost as agile fella then you needa kick to the lead.. not create a contest.. it was very frustrating..

steve rat

EDIT: hehe, i wrote quicked instead of kicked

Fair point, still think that we should line up with Mcdougal at FF and Staker/Jako at CHB. If they can make some space for the quicker guys, maybe dummy lead, it could just work.

Chambers has to get a game this week or something is wrong. Selwood too. The quality of disposal recently has dropped off and Braun, Jones, Green, Banfield are the worst offenders.
I have more confidence in Carrols disposal than any of those 4.

Playing talls in the forward line doesn't automatically equal high balls. We should play as we have always done, the difference is we have a target that can mark the ball against an opponent instead of someone who is 5' 7". You don't need to be Einstein to see Matera's form is suffering being the focal point.
As soon as a team clogs up our half forward line our current forward strategy fails miserably. A couple of tall marking options can counter that.
