Who rates this bloke? If he's pick for australia it should be as a all rounder, i would not open with him, its a insult too alot of other batsmen in this country. But im a firm believer if you cry over a strained hamstring, you should not be allowed too represent this country!

I am a firm believer that this bloke is one of the most over-rated cricketers Australia has ever produced... He is a dead set hack, useless player.

I rate him, good cricketer, but needs to work on getting back to full fitness before he is re-established to Internatational cricket. He will be fighting for Andrew Symonds' spot in the long form, but he's good enough to get into the ODI team as a batsman alone.

You honestly believe there are no better batsmen in this country?

Would go so far as calling him a hack, but definitely agree he is incredibly overrated.

He is definitely a beneficiary of the silver spoon selection policy afforded to some youngsters in Australia... primarily because he is seen as an allrounder.

The sad thing is he actually believes all the rhetoric and highly rates himself.

Is that supposed to be... "wouldn't go so far as calling him a hack?" Just making sure.

I think he is very over-rated, he does nothing with the ball, he only gets wickets in ODI's, because the batsmen get themselves out, in a Test Match, they'd just leave him be or block him out, if things aren't going his way in an ODI, he'll throw in a bouncer or two, which tend to go 6 foot over the batsmans head, which in a Test Match, would be very useless. I honestly don't think he's even a good batsman, he's very scratchy early, and has brain fades all to often and gets out playing a very stupid shot. There are a number of better batsmen in the country that aren't playing International Cricket than Watson, and while Symonds is performing in The Test team, I cannot see Watson getting back in the side any time soon.

Over-rated, soft, but definately not a hack or useless. That comment tends to indicate you have no idea.

Averages 50 in FC cricket with the bat, and 30 with the ball. Averages 30 with both bat and ball in ODIs. Not really figures from a dead set hack.

Re: Shane "Hack" Watson

prob top allrounder in the one dayers besides white and symonds

Time for another cricketing lesson for our dear old Victorian folks. Shane "The Hack" Watson (49.17) averages more with the bat in FC cricket than the following list of stars:

Hodge
Mash
Jewell
Klinger
Moss
McDonald
White
Crosthwaite

The only two Victorian bowlers who have a better FC bowling average than Watson (30.46) are:

Lewis (28.74), and
Harwood (29.80)

So these superstar strike bowlers average < 2 runs less than Watson.

Comparing the great Victorian allrounders to Watson:

ODIs:
Cameron White: 9 Games. Batting average = 13.75. Bowling average = 3 wickets @ 40.00

Shane Watson: 52 Games. Batting average = 30.58. Bowling average = 52 wickets @ 31.28.

Andrew McDonald: 0 games.

FC:
Cameron White: 67 matches. Batting average = 36.63. Bowling average = 38.38.

Shane Watson: 54 matches. Batting average = 49.17. Bowling average = 30.46.

Andrew McDonald: 23 matches. Batting average = 32.44. Bowling average = 31.55.

Domestic OD games:
Cameron White: 78 matches. Batting average = 32.77. Bowling average = 34.79.

Shane Watson: 110 matches. Batting average = 33.41. Bowling average = 34.81.

Andrew McDonald: 38 matches. Batting average = 29.55. Bowling average = 40.30.

I've highlighted the areas where these 2 great all-rounders have the edge over the hack.

That doesn't give him a license to play international cricket.

So by that logic these players do not deserve to play international cricket:

White
Hodge
Mash
Moss
Jewell
Klinger
McDonald
Pattinson
Denton
Lewis
Harwood
McKay

I'm glad we got that sorted.

Surely you're not suggesting that Watson is a better bat than Hodge?

No. What i am suggesting is if Hodge is a very good batsmen (which i believe him to be), how is a "hack" and a "useless" player averaging more than him in FC cricket?

Brad Hodge: 189 matches @ 48.26.
Shane Watson: 54 matches @ 49.17.

Shane Watson has a better average by less than 1 run and has only played 54 FC matches.

I can't see Hodge averaging 30 with the ball either.

Stuart Law averaged 50.83 after 338 matches and Martin Love averages 50.20 after 201 matches, but some Victorian supporters believe Hodge is the far-superior batsman.

Picking an all rounder to open not the go you reckon , I reckon picking an all rounder who can't bowl and bats at 7 is not the go .

So let me get this straight.

You believe Watson is a hack, yet he averages more with the bat than Hodge in FC cricket, even though Watson is an all-rounder, but Hodge isn't?

Hodge has played almost triple the FC matches that Watson has played.
