what are the thoughts of him playing as that big bodied midfielder in the way that adam goodes plays for sydney.I think he has the talent and may help out the likes of pendles and thomas and take the burden off of burns [ if he plays on ] and obree. He is a one touch player and with him forkin the ball out to our runners he may be a viable option in there. He does have the tendency to try to do too much but i think the guy has huge talent.I wouldnt mind wellingham beig used as a tagger either.

His lazy he wouldnt run back just forward
I dont think he will be at the club next year think he will go back to WA

he has the body and athletic ability to play just about anywhere on the ground similiar to a jared brennan.
i think we could use him as a swing man from midfield to backline as he can play tall down back aswell IMO i would have given him a crack at riewoldt saturday night or thrown him into the middle we did neither.
he has shown alot late in the year carrying the ball and breaking lines i like what i see

Doesn't have that explosive burst of speed Goodes has.

I think Cox will have a breakout season in 09 - Malthouse needs to play him every week.

Yep I agree that he doesn't have that speed to burn guys off the mark to ever be as effective as Goodes, but he could play a similar tall midfield role. I also agree that he is a bit of a one way runner and more importantly I don't know if he will ever have the fitness to play that role all game

I think he has some talent and midfield is where he should be played - probably out on a wing but he was in the centre square for some bounces on the weekend.

Still would not be surprised if he finds himself back in WA after trade week though. I think we would move him on if the price is right.

Convenient racial profiling.

Coxy not as smart as Goodes and would need to lift his fitness levels.

I reckon he showed enough in the last few games to suggest he could be a valuable and versatile player for us.

He would need to get a lot fitter, but has goods skills and the poise to do well in any part of the ground.

I like this kid and beleive he will be a very good player for us, i doubt however he could play midfield full time, may do ok as a tagger eventually but a wing or half forward flank seems ideal for him IMO.
Is actgually very quick for his size and has very good footy smarts, needs room however to be damaging as one on one hell beat most bigger blokes for speed and id too big for the smaller flankers.
Have patience pies fans and wait till he gets to 50 games before we make a final judgement on the kid.

Tradeable , especially if he gets us a secound round pick for our fourth.

Plays too much school boy footy.

I used to be a fan of Cox, but I thought his two finals games, 12 and 10 possessions respectively, showed up his soft hands and lack of intensity/commitment. I think he is around 22 yrs, not so young, and don't think he has improved since the VFL final game when he played on Nathan Ablett two year's back. Trade him, and if nobody wants him, take the hint and delist him. He looks awkward at the centre bounces, and hangs around packs rather than contributing.

Has a fair bit of talent and showed enough in the last few games to warrant his spot... on the other side of that argument though he would have lifted his trade value by doing some impressive things - plus I still don't think his head is completely in the right space for Mick's liking.

I'd be happy to trade him if we were offered something like a late 2nd rounder. If we don't trade him though it won't be the end of the world

Shannon Cox + 3rd Rounder

For

2nd Rounder

Fair deal we can try and get another midfielder and the club will only be losing a round in the draft

I think we should try to do quite a few of these trades with a bunch of players on our list. Shaw, Johnson, Egan etc. We could get rid of a bunch of guys who aren't in our long term plans and get some very good picks.

Problem is that not many clubs will part with picks easily this year but it would be nice.

A team like Fremantle would do that trade. They've delisted/retired A LOT of players, so they'll need to top up their list similarly to this.

I rate coxy.
saw him in the willy grand final a couple of years back and he dominated in the backline when we got thumped. wondered why he hadn't played senior footy. malthouse must have an issue with his ethic/behaviour, there must surely have been more in the adelaide incident, leon had the runs on the board to keep playing, but the others have suffered since.

Of the two silky, laconic players i rate coxy miles above egan, who must go. Cox's game against Freo showed me he should stay next year and be given opportunities on a flank and the wing. 1 more year. Then we'll chat.

This would seem to indicate that he did have a work rate problem. Maybe not a problem as such but struggled to adapt to what is required to play at AFL level. He thought he could just rock up and play.

We have obviously persevered with him so we must see some talent. It is just whether or not we think he now realises what it takes to get the best out of himself. If that is not the case, then we should seek a trade back to WA.

He may be worth one more year to see if he can get himself right.

Cox showed in the last few h&a rounds that he has the talent to be a very good footballer, rebounded well as a defender, ran and carried, broke the lines and hit targets. Very good overhead.

Just seems to have concentration issues at times and can lack that fierceness at the contest but the boy can play and deserves another year where I expect he will get plenty of chances to cement a slot up on the wing or across half back.

I don't know if it's that I had high expectations of him or what but for mine it is a real worry that he still has massive question marks in the same areas.

I think he showed what we all knew he had in the last H&A games but no improvement in the areas in which kept him out of the side. His to attack on the ball is iffy which makes midfield roles a little hard, his fitness and pace are not to midfield standard. His acountability is not to defence standards. I think he has what it takes but I really want to see an improvement in the areas where he lacks as that will be the difference between him making it and not making it

First off, I disagree re: improvement in the attack on the ball, I thought he was better than usual in those areas in our last few games.

As for attack on the ball, he's better in this area than either O'Bree or Didak, and they seem to get by. Fitness is the main concern, as long as he's not played in the backline.

Fair point re O'Bree and Didak. I don't rate Didak as midfielder and much of it has to do with his attack on the ball and pace. O'Bree gets by on very very very good smarts around the stoppages he is superb in this area and without it would not get by. I don't think Cox has the same football smarts to depend on.

Cox will be 23 next March. He has not improved his defensive skills or his intensity at the contest in 2 years. He did a few nice things in the two finals, but had no impact in the centre and collected too few possessions. His 3rd man at the contest efforts in the 1st final were impressive, but otherwise I don't reckon he will give us any advantage in the midfield. Maybe he could flush out our numbers and be a back up player to some real mid-fielders. Or be used as trade fodder.
