There was an article in Saturdays Hun about share housing, and how its now the "cool" thing to do!

Who's got some (good or bad) stories about share housing experiences? Moved in with strangers and made a success of it?

Sharing sucks when you live with pigs and psychos.
My last housemate was a total pig, what amazed me is that he had his girlfriend convinced that I was the one making the mess. She soon found out when they moved in together.

If you haven't already, read 'He Died With a Falafel In His Hand' by John Birmingham. Total crack up.

I live at a college here in Hobart. Its great! I love it to bits, especially the intercollege rivalry that exists between us and the other two colleges. The party's are great, the ppl are nice and its all good. If your a student and moving from where youve grown up, live in a college. You get to know ppl and make new friends!

I lived at a College in Adelaide.

Great fun and a lot of my friends are from there.

Ready made social life.

Shame about the affect on my uni career though!!

I had the option of moving into a few share houses earlier this year. One was with friends, another was with friends of a friend, while I also had another option of starting up a share house and trying to attract others myself (although, that's a risky prospect, IMO).

In the end, I ended up getting a flat of my own, and believe that it was the right choice. Too many people that I know, have had complaints (either major or minor), with living with other people.

Even though I'm sure either of the other options wouldn't have been too bad, I wasn't prepared to take the risk, and have it not work out, in regards to something so important.

Living alone allows me the space I want, as well as the freedom to chose when I want to do things. Likewise, I am not reliant upon others to have their finances in order to pay expenses (obviously though, the obligation falls squarely on me - but that's just part of the deal).

A lot of people make the comment, that they find it hard to believe that I wouldn't get lonely. However, despite being 'alone', I have never really felt that living alone has caused me to be lonely. As I live close to the city, this therefore means that I have little distance to travel to quite a number of friends' places, as well as uni and work (as well as many various other places to go out and meet others on the weekend). Likewise, I've found that a lot of friends are more willing to drop by for a few hours, as opposed to where I used to live out in the eastern suburbs.

Given that one of the factors that influenced my decision, was to live closer to my g/f (who convinced me in regards to making the move in the first place), it's kind of strange that we've since split up, and she's never even visited - yet one thing is sure though, that I have found that having your own flat is very appealing to girls, so in effect, I've ended up doing better since anyway! :D ;)
