Shawry (the play)
SHOW INFORMATION
Collingwood Captain

Shawry is the icon Collingwood figure who led the Collingwood Football Club to victory in the 1990 Grand Final – a victory that came after 32 years of loss and heartbreak for the club.

Winning the Norm Smith medal on the day, and the veteran of over 300 games, he was the greatest Captain Collingwood ever had. A small man with a big heart.

Featuring Sadie, the ubiquitous Collingwood supporter who lives and breathes The Magpies, this is a story about Tony Shaw; a comedy, a tragedy, a drama and a trip down memory lane. An historical play that will make people laugh and cry.

This play is written by multi award winning playwright Neil Cole, with Sean Paisley as Director. Simon Madden of Essendon Football Club is Executive Producer.

I went and saw Shawry last night.

Worth going for those that really want an insight into Shawry from his growing up years, his drive, passion and personality which leads up to the 1990 flag (which is no spoiler). What I didnt expect were stories about certain legends of the club, their influences and incidents that steered our club's history (....and IMO even the impact its had to this very day, although that wasn't at all mentioned or pointed out in the play, just my observation).

On the arts side of the play - its very well written, well weighted for most parts, sincere and thoughtful. Brilliantly very Australian and willing to take the p1ss out of ourselves as long suffering pie eye Collingwood supporters or Aussie culture in general with very relatable belly laughs. It's great to see and we need to be reminded and indentified as ourselves being Australian more, especially on stage. Only 2 actors on stage that were simply wonderful and were truthful to story telling and acting. 👏

Most surprising to me and the audience, detailed the very real and heart felt deep sadness of 2 off fields incidents of loss (RIP). There wasnt one person in the room that couldnt feel that emotion.

No spoilers for those wanting to see it as its still on until tomorrow 24th. I really hope the current playing list and coaching staff saw it.

(picture from my seat. a stage hand is welcoming in the audience. I didnt get a picture of the actors on stage. being such an initmate environment and close up it wasn't appropriate)

Went during the week and also thoroughly enjoyed it. Independent theatre isn't normally my thing. But this was so well done and was written with an audience of diehard Collingwood supporters in mind. Both actors did a splendid job. I heard on the radio its going to go on tour next year. Definitely recommend it for anyone who hasn't had a chance to see it in this run.
