Just reported on SEN's "Back Page" segment by a representative of the Age... Sam Sheldon will nominate for the draft this year, not next year as was expected. The Brisbane Lions are among those interested.

Article will be up after midnight most probably.

It's a blow to Carlton who where intending to draft him next year under the F/S rule.

IMO, Carlton made the right call based on his talent level at this point in comparison to who will be available at 35 in this draft.

That sucks...but suppose its pretty understandable...I would be taking every chance I had...the risk for him is if he was injured next year he might slide in the standings and never make it onto an AFL list...there are a lot of talented players out there who just missed out on making it onto a list at 18 or 19 years old and missed out on an AFL career altogether.

Hmmm...

Could be karma catching up to us, first Murphy, now Gibbs

Oh well I know which 2 out of the 3 I would prefer.

Please tell me what Carlton did wrong in drafting the best available player if Sheldon's decision is karma?

If that's his attitude to playing with his father's club and a possible guarantee he'll be picked up next year then I don't want a player with that attitude at Carlton. We need players who would eat a football to play for this great club and not a player who thinks we're going to pick him just because of his last name. It's understandable that he wants to nominate because clubs have said they'll pick him, but he could be overlooked this Saturday and not improve to be worth pick 35 next year.

No loss.

He's so young that he might not even be picked up and he might be wise to spend another year playing in the TAC cup. And he has so much puppy fat on him for a 17 year old that he looks like that fat kid from The Goonies. :o

Sheldon opts for draft over Blues.

Thats extremely disappointing to think he doesn't want to play for us, I couldn't think of anything worse than heading interstate to play for Brisbane.

If that happens I think he'll regret it, for the sake of 1 year.

If the kid wants to nominate for the draft then so be it. Who are you to be having a crack at him? His first priority is to play league footy, to whatever club he can next year and good luck to him. He may still end up at Carlton. You say "No loss", so if we draft him will you say "No gain?"

Ken just made a statement to the effect........"No matter which club picks him up he will be in Navy Blue in two years, so draft him at your peril....."

:D ;)

I highly doubt it and it's a pathetic statement if even semi-true.
If he's so keen on playing for Carlton in 2 years time, he can just wait for next years draft.

I however say good on the kid for nominating this year. He shouldn't have to wait around and starve himself of opportunities to suit the club.

It was a joke mate ;)

It was a light-hearted coment, Sheldon's decision is karma to Carlton for picking up 2 no 1 draft picks recently that were originally destined as father-sons.

From what I've saw of him a couple of years ago, he would be worth a late pick on poetential alone. Was a real stand out in the middle at U16 level every time I saw him play.

Based on his age and ability, I think the club has made the right decision, as he's probably not a 35 pick.

Obviously I'd like to have the sons of former greats at the club, however not to the detriment of our development.

If he's around later take him, if not good luck to him elsewhere.

Who considers that a crack?

If a club has given him a guarantee he'll be picked he's made the right decision so he can get on an AFL list and I hope he makes it.

We would drafted him at pick 35 if we rated him and there are better performed players available later that means we're likely to overlook him.

It's no loss if we get a better player.

But not worth pick #35 this year, considering this draft goes pretty deep with its talent. As I have said, #51 at best, but maybe #67 if he is still there.

This does give us a slight headache now with Johnston and Williams in the mix this year as well. My gut is will now only get Jy Williams.
